Drinking wells keep drying up in Willcox area

For homeowner Hazard Hawk, it was a case of three strikes and his well was out. He and his wife, Deborah, had to abandon their well in Cochise County's Dragoon Mountains foothills last February, after sediment built up in it and browned its water so heavily that they felt it was unfit for them and their four horses to drink. Three years earlier, they had a well company install a new set of pipes for the well after it had also filled with sediment.

State pushes 10% water use cut for farmers in Willcox Basin

In a pioneering step for groundwater regulation, the Arizona Department of Water Resources proposes to order most farmers in the Willcox Basin to cut their water use by 10% over the next 15 years. That cut, contained in ADWR's first management plan aimed at restoring the basin's depleted aquifer, represents the first time the agency has even proposed to require farmers to reduce their water use by a specific amount since the Arizona Groundwater Management Act was enacted in 1980.

Tucson Water customers to see no immediate change under river cutback plan

Tucson Water customers will see "no immediate changes" in their water service or in their daily water-use requirements as a result of the water-cutting plans laid out in a new federal report, city officials said. While city officials are still reviewing the final environmental impact statement on the Colorado River released last Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, "initial indicators" are that the report generally aligns with Tucson's expectations, they said in a news release.
