Japan becomes the focus for APAC M&A tower activity
Two recently disclosed digital infrastructure transactions have shaken the foundations of Japan’s tower market, which is approximately 97% owned by MNOs NTT DOCOMO, KDDI, Softbank, and Rakuten Mobile. Japan’s sole towerco JTOWER last month accepted an offer from digital infrastructure investor DigitalBridge to acquire the company. The deal is now passed on to its shareholders before it is green lighted – the tender offer acceptance deadline is Thursday 10th October.

Changi to create Open House as flavour for T4 unveiling
Changi Airport Group will unveil an Open House concept in August, providing local residents a glimpse of what they will expect from the new terminal four. This will include a flavour of what the duty-free shopping experience will be like when the terminal opens in the second half of this year. At the various zones along the Open House route, they will be invited to play location-based in-app games where they can win e-vouchers for use at Changi airport’s retail and food and beverage (F&B) outlets.
Red Sea resorts set for high demand among European travellers - CIR
Forecast international seat capacities from Europe to Egypt in the six months from June to November are set to ramp up significantly, boding well for duty-free retailers and the beleaguered tourism market in certain destinations within the region, according to travel-retail intelligence service Counter Intelligence Retail (CIR). Scheduled international seat capacities from June to November will rise 7.9% on average, according to CIR. However, in some locations the growth will be over +200%.
ARI North America awarded Québec airport duty-free contract
Aer Rianta International North America Inc (ARINA) announced it has been awarded a long-term duty-free contract at Québec City Jean Lesage International airport. The contract, which will run for seven years and five months from December, will operate a 400sq m The Loop Hors Taxes store. Indian travel-retail operation Delhi Duty Free (DDFS) achieved many key milestones in June, including recording $15.1m during the period – its highest ever monthly sales achieved. FDFA reports 24% uplift in May Canadian airport duty-free sales
The Frontier Duty Free Association (FDFA) has released the latest duty-free sales statistics, provided by the Canadian Border Services Agency for May 2017. The overall national land border duty-free sales figure for the month was C$13.3m ($10.2m), a 1.14% decrease on May 2016. January/May 2017 sales fell 1.75% compared to the same period in 2016, totalling C$47.9m. On the airport front, the like-for-like national duty-free sales figure for May was C$37.2m, a 24% uplift compared to May 2016.
Turkish Airlines and Emirates lifts US laptop ban
Emirates and Turkish Airlines have confirmed that they have removed the cabin ban on laptops and other electronic devices on US-bound flights. Under security measures put into effect in March, electronics larger than a mobile phone were banned from passenger cabins on direct flights to the US from airports in eight Muslim-majority nations, including Turkey and UAE. Turkish Airlines lifted its ban earlier this morning on a 6:45am flight from Istanbul Atatürk airport to New York John F.

Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) has confirmed to DFNIonline that Shinsegae Duty Free has been awarded the remaining fashion & accessories contract (DF3) at terminal two. IIAC said it was hopeful the Korean retailer would start operations at the new terminal (below) by the beginning of next year.

Narita to open two arrivals duty-free stores in September
Narita International airport Corporation (NAA) announced it is currently constructing arrivals duty-free shops across all three of its passenger terminals, launching its first two arrivals stores in early autumn. Two Fa-So-La arrivals North and South stores will open in terminal two in September, said the airport. Arrivals stores in T1 and T3 is scheduled to open by the end of the year.
APTRA devotes efforts on wheelchair sports programme
Travel-retail trade body Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association (APTRA) has invested time in corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects in an effort to raise awareness of environmental and disability awareness issues, raising $9,600 towards a wheelchair sports programme via crowdfunding and corporate sponsorship. Both m1nd-set and the Bommidala Group have pledge their support by making their own corporate donations.
Hanwha to discontinue Jeju airport duty-free contract
Hanwha Galleria is to pull out of its duty-free contract at Jeju International airport at the end of August, according to local reports. The department retailer, whose five-year license at the airport was due to end in April 2019, cited a big drop in the number of Chinese tourists after the Chinese government banned the country’s travel agencies from selling Korea-bound package tours in response to the THAAD dispute with Korea.
Four new charities named in 2017 TFWA Care programme
Four new charities, among a total of 13, have been chosen by TFWA to receive support from the TFWA Care programme, the association’s charitable initiative, this year. Folohaiti (Haiti Hurricane Matthew disaster relief), Kampuchea Balopp (sporting and group activities), LittleBigHelp (helping child poverty in Kolkata, India), and OneSight (helping local authorities in developing countries) are the new charitable organisations selected.

Duty Free Americas to make debut at Singapore Changi
Duty Free Americas (DFA) will make its debut in Singapore Changi airport after being awarded a three-year concession to operate a speciality store at terminal two. Dufry-owned The Nuance Group (Singapore) and RSH Singapore were also recipients of two other speciality store contracts at the terminal. The North and Latin American retailer was awarded a 46sq m ‘Black’ retail concept at departure/transit lounge South, T2 until November 2020.
Gatwick annual results sees retail income climb 6.9%
London Gatwick airport reported strong commercial performance in its annual results to March 31 2017, boosted by many retail and food and beverage (F&B) installations. Retail income climbed 6.9% to £163m ($211.6m) during the 12 months to March 31 2017 from £152.5m in the same period the year before. Duty and tax-free performance saw income levels increased 5.0% year-on-year with revenue having rose to £50.3m in its end of year results from £47.9m the year before.
Lotte Duty Free to open expanded World Tower store
Lotte Duty Free is to unveil its fully expanded World Tower duty-free store tomorrow having initially re-opened the outlet in January. This was after the Korean retailer claimed one of three licenses to operate downtown duty-free stores in Seoul in December 2016. The area of the World Tower has been expanded from the existing 14,111sq m to 17,334sq m and is Seoul’s largest duty-free shop, second biggest in Asia and third biggest in the world, according to the retailer.

Global airport app FLIO has been selected by Cologne Bonn airport to provide their complimentary app service to their passengers. FLIO features map plus information about duty-free shopping and food and beverage options along with information about all the facilities. Hotel Shilla joint-venture deal with DFASS Group collapses
Talks between The Shilla Duty Free parent company Hotel Shilla to acquire a 44% stake in US airline and inflight retail concessionaire DFASS Group have collapsed, according to a notice on the Korean Exchange. Samsung Hospitality American Inc, a US based wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung, an affiliate of The Shilla Duty Free, entered into an agreement for a 44% stake in DFASS Group in March 2015.

UK traveller numbers stabilises despite terror attacks
Tourist numbers travelling to the UK have held firm despite the recent number of terror attacks that has affected the country in recent months, according to data released by travel intelligence company ForwardKeys. Data to June 17th showed forward bookings for international arrivals in London for the months of July and August were 12% ahead of what they were at the same point last year, ahead of the European average, which is currently 7.8% ahead.
