On a cold spring day earlier this year, Ellie Golden drove around the Salt Lake Valley, the backseat and trunk of her black SUV stocked with syringes, fentanyl test strips and naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal drug. As the mobile outreach coordinator for the Salt Lake Harm Reduction Project, Golden spends her days meeting with people who use drugs and providing them with supplies meant to diminish the negative impacts that can accompany illicit substances.

PRICE, Utah — When Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood took office in 2015, he made it a top priority to address the scourge of opioid addiction plaguing the place he grew up. The eastern Utah community of around 20,000 people was hit hard by the opioid epidemic in the early 2000s and has long had among the highest drug overdose death rates in the state. "Living in a small community, we all know everybody,” Wood said during a recent interview in his office with FOX 13 News.
