Chronic animal testing is still considered the gold standard of toxicity testing, in both the evaluation of environmental chemicals and drug development. However, it is now widely recognized that animal-based testing has important shortcomings. In the drug discovery process, animal testing often fails to predict the human toxicity of drug candidates. Even when toxicity can be detected, animal testing often can only provide limited insight into the biological pathways that are involved.
