I became more conservative than a Trump voter the day conservatism stopped conserving anything except loyalty to Donald Trump. There was a time when conservatism meant restraint, prudence, limits, and skepticism of concentrated power. It championed balanced budgets, strong alliances, free markets, free speech, and constitutional guardrails. It understood that institutions mattered not because they were perfect but because they had survived tests that shattered weaker systems.
