After an unexpected late-season freeze between April 19 and 22, temperatures in eastern West Virginia were brought into the low 20s, prompting an environmental disaster in the Mid-Atlantic growing region and leaving most orchard producers with massive crop loss.

Grass ripples across the Schoolhouse Ridge section of Harpers Ferry National Park. Muffled by gusts of wind moving through the warm-season grasses of the battlefield, a faint scream from the nearby Old Standard Quarry can be heard across the road.
