GRT strike avoided, buses will continue to run Friday

The Region of Waterloo and Unifor Local 4304, who represents about 850 Grand River Transit (GRT) workers, have reached a tentative agreement. Transit services will continue as usual, pending ratification by union members on Sunday, May 3. The region announced this in a press release on Thursday, April 30. GRT members remain in a legal position to strike. According to the GRT, further updates will be provided after the vote.

Some workers employed by Grand River Transit will be in a legal strike position as of Friday, May 1. The Region of Waterloo is negotiating with Unifor, Local 4304, which represents about 850 drivers, mechanics, vehicle service attendants and reservationists at GRT. “We continue to work closely with Unifor and both parties are committed to reaching an agreement that is both competitive for GRT staff and affordable for residents,” said the region in a release.

UW approves 2026-2027 budget with projected $13-million deficit

UW board of governors approved the 2026-2027 budget which includes a projected $13-million deficit. The decision was approved in a meeting on April 14. The university is projecting $892-million in revenue for the upcoming fiscal year and $905-million in expenses. The university noted that revenue is made up almost entirely of tuition fees and government grants. Expenses largely consist of salaries, wages, and benefits.
