DETROIT LAKES — A long-vacant building on County Road 17, south of Detroit Lakes, has been transformed into a new hub for coffee, ice cream and locally crafted goods. The Anchor, located in the former Art Johnson’s Store building, officially opened its doors July 2. Owners Chris and Wendy Waalen have spent the last three years completely renovating the historic structure, which dates back to the early 1900s.

DETROIT LAKES — When Mary Madson first heard the news in 1983, she couldn't quite believe it. “Yeah, right, they’re really coming to Detroit Lakes.” That was her reaction when she saw the advertisement in a Hawley newspaper that one of country music’s hottest up-and-coming bands, Alabama, was coming to her hometown. “But if they’re coming here, I’m going,” was her second thought — and she purchased a ticket for the inaugural WE Fest country music festival.
