Responsible well-being and job embeddedness: a case study into newly appointed lecturer retention in a Malaysian university
ABSTRACT Amid rising newly appointed lecturers (NALs) attrition in higher education, NALs in Global South universities face structural conditions that can undermine retention. However, research rarely links universities’ responsibilities for NALs well-being to concrete staying or leaving mechanisms.

Three Ways CPGs Can Get Back to Basics — and Why Fundamentals Matter
For a while there — indeed, a rather long while — businesses were in a state of reaction, pivoting amid successive disruptions. In this dynamic decade, headwinds including the global pandemic, transportation bottlenecks, historic inflation, and geopolitical upheavals continued almost nonstop. Even today, although some challenges have abated, uncertainty is a constant. Or, as the old adage goes: the only constant is change.

Frailty and sex differences in blood pressure control in older adults
|
Abstract We aimed to examine the prevalence of frailty in older adults with hypertension and its association with suboptimal blood pressure (BP), with a particular focus on differences by sex. The study was conducted at two major hospitals in Vietnam from 2023 to 2024. Frailty was defined by a Clinical Frailty Scale of ≥ 4. Suboptimal BP was defined as systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg. There were 1038 participants (326 female, mean age 73 years).

Location-biased β-arrestin conformations direct GPCR signaling
Editor’s summary Depending on the agonist they bind, GPCRs adopt different conformations to activate either G protein– or β-arrestin–dependent pathways, a phenomenon known as biased signaling. In addition to signaling at the plasma membrane, GPCRs can also signal from intracellular compartments. Through real-time monitoring in live cells, Pham et al.

DDX3X is a Cl − -sensitive RNA helicase
Editor’s summary Neurodevelopmental disorders can be associated with aberrant changes in the intracellular concentration of chloride ion (Cl−) in neurons. Rosa e Silva et al. found that Cl− bound to and functionally affected DDX3X, a helicase that unwinds RNA. Cl− binding inhibited the enzymatic activities of DDX3X, as well as its ability to phase separate, and Cl− efflux increased the size of DDX3X-containing stress granules in a neuroblastoma cell line.

EGFR activation sensitizes trigeminal NMDA receptors to promote pain and morphine analgesic tolerance in oral cancer
Editor’s summary Opioids are used to treat the severe pain caused by oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), but tolerance frequently develops. Liu et al. found that inhibitors of the growth factor receptor EGFR, to which OSCC develop resistance, might instead be used to treat the associated pain by targeting tumor-adjacent neurons. In samples from patients and mouse models, EGFR ligands were abundant in OSCC and nearby glial cells.
T cell polarization and NFAT activation are stiffness dependent and differentially regulated by the channels PIEZO1 and ORAI1
Editor’s summary Immune cells are sensitive to the stiffness of the cells that they target. Zhao et al. investigated how substrate stiffness affected the rapid and long-term responses of T cells to target engagement. T cell activation on soft hydrogels or by softened cancer cells impaired cell polarization and nuclear translocation of the transcription factor NFAT1.

p16 expression confers sensitivity to CDK2 inhibitors in cyclin E1-driven ovarian cancers
Editor’s summary In ovarian cancers with abundant cyclin E1, inhibitors of the kinase CDK2 effectively block the cell cycle. However, the compensatory activities of CDK4 and CDK6 can restart the cell cycle, causing drug resistance. Sine et al. found that CDK2 inhibitors were more durably effective in cyclin E1–driven cells with high abundance of the protein p16.
Trace elements in hair and nail samples of nursery operators in Peninsular Malaysia: occupational exposure and environmental health implications
ABSTRACT Nursery operators are potentially exposed to environmental contaminants, particularly toxic trace elements from prolonged agrochemical use. This study evaluated and compared trace element concentrations in hair and nail samples of nursery operators from conventional and organic nurseries in Peninsular Malaysia. A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted with 48 participants (20 from conventional and 28 from organic nurseries).
TIM3 is a context-dependent coregulator of cytotoxic T cell function

Will Levi’s succeed in its comeback?
In the 80s, everyone had, or wanted, a pair of Levi’s jeans. Today, they are rarely the first choice. Besides, the market has for years been saturated with alternatives for comfort and casual trousers, sweeping denim jeans aside as the go-to category for staple bottoms. Despite this, Levi’s still has a storied history and a growing denim market that makes its position such an interesting one.

YAP controls cell migration and invasion through a Rho GTPase switch
Editor’s summary The transcriptional coactivator YAP promotes development and wound healing and is implicated in various diseases. Shah et al. found that YAP promoted cell motility by inducing a switch in the activity of Rho family GTPases. YAP-TEAD4 complexes mediated the induction of TRIO, a guanine nucleotide exchange factor that activated Rac1 and consequently inhibited RhoA, resulting in increased cell migration and invasion.

G protein peptidomimetics reveal allosteric effects and stepwise interactions in ghrelin receptor-G protein coupling
Editor’s summary Ghrelin is a peptide hormone that acts on its G protein–coupled receptor (GPCR) to stimulate appetite and food intake. Signal transduction by GPCRs requires activation of intracellular G proteins in a process involving transient conformational changes in both the receptor and the Gα subunit. Mannes et al. developed synthetic peptides that mimicked the stabilizing effect of Gαq-containing heterotrimers on the active conformation of the ghrelin receptor.
