Nolan’s Been Making ‘The Odyssey’ All Along
July 23, 2026, 5:04 a.m. ET If you haven’t seen Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” yet, good luck. The hit of the summer is selling out showtimes around the country. Wesley Morris initially thought he didn’t need this adaptation. Then, Matt Damon was cast as Odysseus. Curiosity piqued. Fast forward to him in a packed theater (IMAX 70mm, of course) excited by the prospect of an old-fashioned all-star-cast movie. But with Nolan’s filmmaking, it’s never that simple.
Potato salad is the best, most American dish we have. Here’s why.
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... By Wesley Morris The New York Times Not long ago, I found myself drowning in recipes for potato salad. I wish I knew why this happened. An idea had possessed me, and I was trying, if not to exorcise it, then at least to apply the pressure of research. So I turned to Bonnie Slotnick, who runs a shop in New York that specializes in rare and antique cookbooks, and started riffling through every book she could find me with a recipe for potato salad.

Creamy gold potato salad Original
Everybody loved my mother's potato salad. They could taste the love (and, if I may say, the labor). It was essentially the recipe her grandmother used, and now the potato salad I make. Every bite contains every ingredient. So what you're savoring is cream and crunch, sweetness and -- because I'm a seasoned seasoner now -- the paprika's heat. This is a vivid, lively dish, sparked by a convergence of texture and flavor and color.

Nina Simone Knew Just What the Trouble Was. (It’s Still the Trouble.)
Wesley Morris is a Times critic who writes about art and popular culture. June 8, 2026 Here we are, near the end of “Mississippi Goddam,” Nina Simone’s first original protest song of the civil rights era. It touched down in 1964. The previous year, the civil rights activist Medgar Evers had been assassinated outside his home in Jackson, Miss., and four girls had been murdered in a church bombing orchestrated by members of the Ku Klux Klan in Birmingham, Ala.
What Steven Spielberg Taught Me About Fear, Catharsis, and Being Human
On Jan. 1, something amazing happened. Steven Spielberg, a longtime Angeleno and most people’s dictionary definition of “Hollywood director,” became a New York City resident. On the one hand, this is a significant event. What classic Spielberg location requires a 212 or 718 or 646 to phone home?

‘Love Story’ Is Actually a Horror Story
[MUSIC PLAYING] wesley morris I’m Wesley Morris, and this is “Cannonball.” Today, I imagine it’s tough seeing how unhappy you make me. You know what? It is. [MUSIC PLAYING] Like a lot of people, I am watching “Love Story.” It comes out of the Ryan Murphy funhouse. It’s about JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, how she meets this man, had this kind of momentary fairytale relationship.
‘Love Story’ Is Actually a Horror Story
The latest from the Ryan Murphy television fun house is an unquestionable hit. It’s also a ’90s nostalgia bomb. People are trying to eat, shop and dress like John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. They’re obsessed. But with what, exactly? Because at first, “Love Story” has all the hallmarks of a ’90s sitcom — a young working woman in the city, enjoying her freedom till a meet-cute with the one. Only in Murphy’s version, that’s the moment this turns into another one of his American Horror stories.

What the Oscars Got Right
Wesley Morris is an unabashed believer in the Oscars. That they genuinely matter. Every year, he has to re-convince his friend, Sasha Weiss, the culture editor for The New York Times Magazine. This year, of course, there’s the “One Battle After Another” versus “Sinners” of it all. And there’s a lot there. But also, what happened to “Marty Supreme” and poor Timothée Chalamet?

Michael B. Jordan Is a Star. But Is He a Great Actor?
The other week, at the former SAG Awards (I’m just not ready to call them by that new name: the Actors, ay-yi-yi), Michael B. Jordan was in the middle of greeting his new best actor statue when an expression came over him that I’d never seen him make. He was thanking his “Sinners” cast mates by name, while his Actor statue gazed up at him from a table, and suddenly it seemed to occur to him that this accolade really was his.

Cannonball with Wesley Morris Tyra Banks Is (Kinda) Sorry Were you really expecting a full apology?
As a man who loves men, as a man in love with a man, I was surprised by how little I wanted to watch a man fall in love with a man on TV. I’ve been perplexed about why. You can probably imagine where this is going. So forgive me, because yes: the hockey show. For weeks, it — “Heated Rivalry” — took over a wing of the country. You have to watch this thing, people told me. It’s beautiful, life-giving, hot. Yet something about all the drooling got on my nerves.

Book Review: ‘On Morrison,’ by Namwali Serpell
ON MORRISON, by Namwali Serpell The stratosphere is a kind of in-between space for an artist. Maybe you’ve achieved the celestial, but then all you’ve got is everybody gazing up at you, existing under you, loving the idea of you, the light of you, the gas of you, your myth. The question becomes: Who’s touching you? Often not much criticism, not rigorous criticism. I get it. The stratosphere is all the way up there. Upon arrival, who would know they were even there? It’s perilous.

And for Wesley, no movie hit that pleasure center more than “When Harry Met Sally.” He watched it over and over as a teenager. It’s probably why he moved to New York. He wanted what they were having.
