With more than 5 million votes cast statewide, former Fox News anchor Steve Hilton and former state Attorney General Xavier Becerra lead the California governor’s race and are likely to face off in the November general election. Hilton had won nearly 28% of votes and Becerra about 25% as of Wednesday morning. Billionaire Tom Steyer earned nearly 20% of the votes but likely will have a difficult time catching up.

In the most crowded California governor’s race in modern history, there is a voting bloc that has helped shape statewide elections for decades that few candidates appear to be seriously courting: Black Californians. Black Californians make up roughly 6% of the state’s likely voters, which is in line with their share of California’s population, and are overwhelmingly registered as Democrats.
