Will Maupin’s Biography

Freelance journalist from Spokane who covers college basketball, cannabis and local community and culture.

Most of my work these days can be found in Spokane's alt-weekly, the Inlander, where I write the weekly cannabis section, Green Zone. During the college basketball season I also contribute weekly blogs about the Gonzaga Bulldogs, as well as a story or two in print each month. Starting in late 2022, I have been handling a story on a local winery, cidery or brewery in the food section of the Inlander's bi-monthly magazine, Health & Home. I have also contributed to special guides like the ski season-focused Snowlander, holiday themed Gift Guide, and have written sponsored content for local businesses, non-profits and events.

College basketball and cannabis are my two main beats, but they're far from the only subjects I've covered for the Inlander. From features on local artists, celebrities, businesses and events to profiles of the best patios for cheap eats, I've written about nearly everything other than breaking news or serious, investigative reporting.

Prior to the Inlander I spent about six and a half years covering West Coast Conference basketball for SBNation's Mid-Major Madness, for which I was credentialed at numerous events from conference preseason media days through regular season games all the way to the Final Four and National Championship. My work there was everything from quick-turnaround game recaps, features and profiles, and a weekly power ranking/deep dive into every team in the WCC.

My initial start in journalism was January of 2011, when I founded and began writing Will's WCC Blog, a site nobody knew about, let alone read. In 2019, having left Mid-Major Madness, I rebooted Will's WCC Blog on Medium and continue to write about the WCC on there, albeit less frequently. It's the place for when I want to dive deep into some sort of college basketball issue that is far to niche for a publication like the Inlander to even consider printing. It's the passion project.

While most of my work in journalism has been in print, I have also done countless interviews for live TV, radio and podcasts as a guest brought on to discuss college basketball (and, one time, a horseshoes tournament).
