'Until the last bag of trash': Crews clear nearly 300K pounds of debris from WNC rivers

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Rivers throughout Western North Carolina bring millions of dollars each year to the regional economy. With summer just around the corner, and trash and debris still visible in some of the waterways, News 13 is investigating whether the industry is in jeopardy. Between the rocks and rapids of the French Broad River, you can still see signs of Hurricane Helene in the water. That includes piles of pipes that MountainTrue is working tirelessly to clear out.

'I'm going to fight for it': Local businesses struggle to recover 6 months after Helene

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Nearly half of all local businesses are often forced to close after a natural disaster. Here in the mountains, many small business owners are trying to avoid that trend six months after Hurricane Helene. Local organizations like Mountain Bizworks are doing what they can to help. If you step inside Gypsy Queen, there's a good chance you'll see owner Suzy Phillips. She not only owns the popular spot in West Asheville but the nearby Simple Cafe, too.
