California Franchise Broker Registration Law Takes Effect July 1, 2027: What Franchisors, Franchise Brokers, and Franchise Sales Organizations Need to Know
Franchisors, brokers, and franchise attorneys have been anticipating the implementation of Senate Bill 919 (SB 919), which amended the California Franchise Investment Law to create one of the nation's most comprehensive regulatory schemes governing franchise brokers and franchise sales organizations.
ADA Website Accessibility Lawsuits on the Rise: What Businesses and Restaurants Need to Know | JD Supra
Businesses across the United States, particularly restaurants and retailers, are facing a sharp increase in lawsuits alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) due to inaccessible websites and mobile applications. UB Greensfelder has seen an uptick in the number of St. Louis-based businesses, notably restaurants with online ordering systems, that are receiving such demands, perhaps indicating that these particular area businesses are being targeted.
FTC Implements New Rule Regulating Subscription-Based Services, Free Trial Offers, and Other Automatic Renewal Sales Systems | JD Supra
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) introduced its updated Negative Option Rule on October 16, 2024 (the “New Rule”). The New Rule targets deceptive practices associated with subscription-based services through which companies continue charging consumers for products or services unless the consumer actively cancels. The New Rule is designed to make it easier for consumers to opt out of such services and aims to improve transparency regarding the terms of such arrangements.
Channeling the Pittsburgh Pirates: Hitting Apples
When you’re 11 and in love with strength, power and baseball, apples can take on a near-mystical function. “Have you ever thrown an apple off a stick?” Uncle Sullins asked. I shook my head, and that brought Uncle Sullins off the porch and into his backyard. My brother, 18 to my 11, curious about this little adventure, joined us. Uncle Sullins found a broken branch, pulled out his pocket knife and quickly whittled a sharp point at the end of the stick.
A medley of memories
Sometimes, it's the little things you remember. For drama, entertainment and sometimes simply evoking empathy in those around him, there were few players ever to play in a Super Bowl who could provide more of each than Washington's Dexter Manley. A defensive end, Manley was as famous for his antics as he was for his multiple sack seasons. At Super Bowl XXII, Manley grew bored with answering similar questions over and over.
What Doug Williams was really asked
Benjamin "Butch" John was, by all accounts, an outstanding sports writer, sports columnist and feature writer for the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss. He wrote with distinction about the New Orleans Saints, the SEC and a variety of other topics. He arrived at Super Bowl XXII a simple objective: produce columns that were clear, insightful and maybe just a bit different and better than what others were writing.
An icy walk down memory lane
In January of 1992, the average daily temperature in Minneapolis was 17.8 degrees, Fahrenheit, not Celsius. The lowest temperature that month was minus -7. Fahrenheit, not Celsius. San Diego it was not. I was in Minneapolis for Super Bowl XXVI between Washington and Buffalo. It's important, I think, to experience a city as its residents experience it, to challenge the elements, to get out and live! Or something like that.
The last hurrah of Ottis Anderson
From 1990 through the 1994 regular seasons, the Buffalo Bills were the dominant team in the AFC. They ran a no-huddle offense, orchestrated by quarterback Jim Kelly, who threw short and long to a talented corps of receivers and running backs. The Bills went to four straight Super Bowls, and it would seem the odds of winning at least one were in their favor. The Bills went 0-4. They began their string of Super Bowl appearances in game XXV against the New York Giants in Tampa.
The prediction I couldn't miss
There were only two times in my decades-long career when I was certain of the outcome of games. The first was Super Bowl XXXVII between Tampa Bay and the Oakland Raiders in San Diego. It's difficult to imagine a city where the stress level should be lower than San Diego. Perfect temperatures. Low humidity. Sunshine in abundance. An ocean, pretty sure it's the Pacific, nearby and in some cases, just out the door and down the beach. And yet, the Raiders players and coaches seemed stressed.
A dream assignment
Covering the Super Bowl can be a dream assignment. For an hour a day, Monday through Thursday, players and coaches from both teams are required to meet with the media. The players might not answer your questions, you might not be able to get close enough to even ask your question or a player might be handed a phone to spend a few minutes on a radio show in Albuquerque just as you're starting, finally, to ask a question. Most players are professional and courteous.
Lyle Alzado saves the day at Super Bowl 18
Someone in authority in the fast-food place ordered that free food be dispensed. When that ended, the people were shooed from the establishment and the door was locked. When I arrived, people were milling about the parking lot. One mother said, "It's one thing to do this to adults. They'll get over it. But they shouldn't disappoint these kids." But why did the adults think the players were coming?

Paul Woody remembers RTD sports writer John Packett, who died this week
I n the end, we each face one overwhelming question: Was mine a life well lived? "He was one of the best human beings I ever worked with," former Richmond Times-Dispatch sports editor and deputy managing editor Howard Owen said of John Packett, who went by JP in the newsroom. "JP was just a good person. He was a prince. He was a great guy." Packett, a Times-Dispatch sports writer from 1970-2009, died late Monday night. He was 77 and had spent almost all of those years brimming with life.

For the rest of that week, there was a constant flow of stories about Bryant in print, on television and online.

Woody: Bugel's teaching made his blockers great
Coaching is filled with characters, but even among all those characters, Joe Bugel was rare. The former Washington Redskins offensive line coach, offensive coordinator and head coach of the Phoenix (now Arizona) Cardinals and Oakland Raiders, died Sunday. He was 80. He got his money’s worth out of those 80 years. He spent his life coaching and helping other coaches build winning teams. He helped the Redskins win Super Bowls and helped players and coaches earn spots in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Former Negro Leagues pitcher Henry Mason, a resident of Henrico County, died on May 29 at 88. According to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, after completing high school in 1951, Mason left Marshall, Mo., and headed to Kansas City, where he tried out with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues. Manager Buck O'Neil was so impressed with Mason that he signed him to a contract.
Meet RTD Sports: Paul Woody has seen it all, and then some, covering the Redskins

Paul Woody served as a sports columnist for the Times-Dispatch and News Leader for 40 years. He retired last December but continues to write as a freelance correspondent. A Sunday night NFL game filled with foolishness, ineptness, drama and head-banging plays led to a lot of head scratching.
Sports memories: VCU defeats Kansas to make Final Four

Smart receives raise, incentives to stay, win at VCU
Shaka Smart, Virginia Commonwealth University’s men’s basketball coach, has the potential to be a well-dressed, well-paid member of the Division I college coaching fraternity through 2028 should he choose to stay in his current job. Smart’s new contract with VCU, signed Oct. 11, keeps his base salary at $450,000 per season. But his supplemental income increases in the first year to $950,000, up from $800,000 in his previous contract.
On the court, the UR and VCU coaches are rivals. But their kids play on the same team.

June 28, 2016: WOODY: How I spent my summer vacation
I've always considered pedaling my bike around town and up and down mountains to be time well spent. And sometimes, when you stop to help a someone or, in this case, something"friend in need, you're "rewarded" in unusual ways. This was published June 28, 2016. The vacation began with one foot in North Carolina. It ended with a turtle urinating on me in the middle of Route 5 along the Virginia Capital Trail. In between, there were mountains to descend, mountains to climb and cramps to fight off.

When I saw the Rainbow Games were taking place at the Arthur Ashe Center, I decided to visit and see if I could find a column topic. What I found is memorable athletic feats occur in surprising places. This column appeared March 22, 1995. Coaches talk stress and players talk pressure, but how does the stress of the NCAA basketball tornament compare to the stress of waking every morning and knowing that this day, and every day forever, will be spent in a wheelchair?

On Dec. 3, 1979, just before 6:30 a.m., I walked into the lobby of the Richmond Newspapers building, which then faced East Grace Street, and told the security guards I was there for my first day of work with the Richmond News Leader. Woody: Virginia's victory over Duke certainly satisfying for Cavs fans
CHARLOTTESVILLE — The crowd in Scott Stadium left early. This time, it wasn’t in disgust or despair over what they had seen from the Virginia Cavaliers. This time, it was because the outcome of the game long had been a foregone conclusion. The Cavaliers provided a satisfying and entertaining day, not to mention an outcome Virginia fans are beginning to expect. Virginia 48, Duke 14. That score says a lot, but it doesn’t come close to saying it all. Virginia’s offense was fine.
WOODY: For the Redskins, there are no silver linings in these clouds
