Prognostic factors and nomograms predicting overall survival and cancer specific survival for patients with rare histological variant prostate cancer
Abstract Our study aimed to develop nomograms to accurately predict the 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) of patients with rare histological variant prostate cancer (PCa) based on clinicopathological characteristics. We gathered clinicopathological and prognostic data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database.
mHolmes improves cross anatomical cadaveric microbiome forecasting for postmortem interval estimation
Abstract Forensic microbiology leverages postmortem microbiome succession as a promising biomarker for estimating the postmortem interval (PMI). However, current methods are constrained by sparse sampling (typically 3–5 time points) and limited cross-anatomical generalizability, leading to imprecise PMI estimates with errors often exceeding ±3 days, particularly in cases of dismembered remains.

An ultrasound-scanning in vivo light source
Abstract Biological systems operate across distributed regions with fast, localized dynamics, yet existing biointerfaces fall short of providing both high spatiotemporal precision and the ability to dynamically target any region without disturbing surrounding tissue. Here we present an in vivo deep-tissue light source based on focused ultrasound scanning of mechanoluminescent nanotransducers circulating through the vasculature.
Deconstruction of a spino-brain–spinal cord circuit that drives chronic pain
Abstract Tissue inflammation or nerve injury at the periphery can cause chronic pain. Although the spinal-cord-projecting neurons in the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVMSC neurons) can promote pain chronification1,2,3,4, the pathway by which peripheral injury signals drive these neurons is poorly understood1,2,3,5.
Python metabolomics uncovers a conserved postprandial metabolite and gut–brain feeding pathway
|
Abstract Most mammals consume small and frequent meals. By contrast, pythons are ambush predators that exhibit extreme feeding and fasting patterns and provide a unique model for uncovering molecular mediators of the postprandial response1,2,3. Using untargeted metabolomics, we show that circulating levels of the metabolite para-tyramine-O-sulphate (pTOS) are increased more than 1,000-fold in pythons after a single meal.

High-density soft bioelectronic fibres for multimodal sensing and stimulation - Nature
Abstract There is an increasing demand for multimodal sensing and stimulation bioelectronic fibres for both research and clinical applications1,2. However, existing fibres suffer from high rigidity, low component layout precision, limited functionality and low density of active components.

Connection between single-mode fiber and hollow-core fiber with large fabrication tolerance using a micro-ball lens
We propose what we believe to be a novel interconnection technique between single-mode fiber (SMF) and nested anti-resonant node-less fiber (NANF), using a coreless fiber (CLF) melted micro-ball lens for mode field matching. The ball lens is fabricated by melting a section of the CLF, while the remaining portion provides an air gap for beam expansion and collimation.
The BRAIN initiative: a pioneering program on the precipice - Nature Neuroscience
Launched in 2013, the BRAIN Initiative (BRAIN) in the United States aimed to unlock the mysteries of the brain and develop new treatments for neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. The success of this program is evidenced by the accelerated discoveries and development of interventions that are happening in real time.

Deep Learning enables reliable and comprehensive profiling of invertible promoters in microbes
Abstract Invertible promoters (invertons) are regulatory elements found in bacteria, with inverted repeat sequences at both ends, leading to alternating changes in the expression of the regulated genes. Since invertons were present in more than 20% of bacterial genomes, while they regulated more than 5% of genes in these genomes, they are of pivotal importance for microbial functional dynamics especially when under stress.
Plastic and stimulus-specific coding of salient events in the central amygdala - Nature
Abstract The central amygdala (CeA) is implicated in a range of mental processes including attention, motivation, memory formation and extinction and in behaviours driven by either aversive or appetitive stimuli1,2,3,4,5,6,7. How it participates in these divergent functions remains elusive. Here we show that somatostatin-expressing (Sst+) CeA neurons, which mediate much of CeA functions3,6,8,9,10, generate experience-dependent and stimulus-specific evaluative signals essential for learning.

The effects of HIIT compared to MICT on endothelial function and hemodynamics in postmenopausal females
Abstract Objective The study was designed to investigate the role of exercise in ameliorating endothelial function (EF) and hemodynamics in postmenopausal females, and compare the different effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) by equalizing training load. Methods Forty-eight postmenopausal females participated in two separate interventions.
A canonical role of SMAD4 in safeguarding 3D genome architecture to suppress lung tumorigenesis
|
Abstract Dysregulation of three-dimensional (3D) genome architecture is a hallmark of cancer, yet the mechanisms by which its disruption drives tumorigenesis remain incompletely understood. Here, we demonstrated that SMAD4 regulated 3D genome organization through its canonical transcription factor activity by directly binding chromatin, thereby suppressing lung tumorigenesis. Hi-C analyses of human lung tumors identify SMAD4 as a potential regulator of 3D genome integrity.
