Abstract Thermogenesis requires that macrophages digest damaged mitochondria released by brown adipocytes. Brown adipocytes regulate body temperature by using their plentiful pools of mitochondria to generate heat in a process called thermogenesis. Rosina et al. found that efficient thermogenesis required the breakdown of damaged mitochondria released from brown adipocytes in extracellular vesicles by brown adipose tissue (BAT) macrophages.
