Spinons, solitons and random-singlet-like behaviours in the spin-chain compound copper benzoate
Abstract The S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is a paradigmatic quantum system hosting exotic excitations. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on copper benzoate, we characterise three distinct types of excitations by tuning the magnetic field at ultra-low temperatures. At 0.2 T, a nearly constant spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) and a divergence-like spin-spin relaxation rate (1/T2G) upon cooling provide experimental evidence for spinon excitations.

Breast cancer through the lens of whole transcriptome spatial imaging
Abstract Using the world’s first transcriptome-scale spatial imaging of a breast tumor, we assessed what could be learned about one patient’s disease. We cataloged heterogeneity across 3 morphological regions, 9 spatial domains, 37 cell types, and 1692 pathways. Then, employing a new algorithm for spatially stratified differential expression, we tested > 2 million hypotheses about cell types’ behavior across space.
Upcycling nanoscale fragments in industrial waste liquids for aqueous battery electrolytes
Abstract Industrial synthesis generates large amounts of waste liquid containing unreacted precursors and nanoscale fragments, posing environmental disposal challenges. However, research on the direct reutilization of raw industrial waste liquids remains limited. Here we develop a direct recycling strategy in which the waste liquid from zeolite synthesis is employed as the solvent for aqueous zinc (Zn)-ion battery electrolytes.
Fuzheng Huayu Jiedu formula induces ferroptosis associated with p53/HO-1/GPX4 axis and inhibits malignant progression in A549 lung cancer cells
Abstract Fuzheng Huayu Jiedu Formula (FHJF) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula with reported anti-tumor properties. However, its mechanism against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unclear. In the present study, we employed human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells as an in vitro model. Cell proliferation and migration were measured by CCK-8, EdU, and wound-healing assays; apoptosis, cell cycle distribution, ROS, and LPO levels by flow cytometry.
Telling China’s story in English: teachers navigating the decolonial turn
ABSTRACT Within the current global reimagining of English language education through a decolonial lens, China represents a unique example of a top-down reform agenda. Unlike grassroots decolonial initiatives in many Global South contexts, China’s approach is embedded in state policy that reframes English to promote national culture and enhance international discourse power – captured in the ideological call to ‘tell China’s story well’.

Spin-supersolidity induced quantum criticality and magnetocaloric effect in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Rb 2 Co(SeO 3 ) 2
Abstract We performed high-field magnetization, magnetocaloric effect (MCE), and NMR measurements on the Ising triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Rb2Co(SeO3)2. The observations of the 1/3-magnetization plateau, the NMR line splits, and the thermal activation behaviors of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 between 2 and 15.8 T provide unambiguous evidence of a gapped up–up–down (UUD) magnetic ordered phase.
Interfacial Ru/RuO x heterostructures on carbon support regulate selectivity in lignin hydrodeoxygenation
Abstract Constructing well-defined heterostructure interfaces in catalysts provides an approach to modulate scaling constraints and steer reaction pathways in biomass upgrading. Herein, we demonstrate that thermal restructuring of hydroxyl groups on carbon nanofibers (CNF) induces the formation of heterostructures of Ru/RuOx, which function as bifunctional active sites for the one-pot hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin to liquid hydrocarbons.

Heterogeneous doping via nanoscale coating impacts the mechanics of Li intrusion in brittle solid electrolytes - Nature Materials
Abstract Lithium dendrite intrusion in solid-state batteries limits fast charging and causes short-circuiting, yet the underlying regulating mechanisms are not well-understood. Here we discover that heterogeneous Ag+ doping dramatically affects lithium intrusion into Li6.6La3Zr1.6Ta0.4O12 (LLZO), a brittle solid electrolyte. Nanoscale Ag+ doping is achieved by thermally annealing a 3-nm-thick metallic coating on LLZO, inducing Ag–Li ion exchange and Ag diffusion into grains and grain boundaries.
Cryogenic electron microscopy and tomography for beam-sensitive materials - Nature Reviews Physics
Abstract In the life sciences, cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has revolutionized structure determination by providing atomic-resolution structures of biomolecules in their native environment and in multiple conformational states. The applications of cryo-EM techniques have been extended from structural biology, which mainly focuses on structural information, to materials science, where chemical and physical information are equally important.
Atmospheric-pressure ammonia synthesis on AuRu catalysts enabled by plasmon-controlled hydrogenation and nitrogen-species desorption - Nature Energy
Abstract The Haber–Bosch process for ammonia synthesis contributes up to ~3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Plasmonic catalysts strongly concentrate light and can alter the reaction intermediates via out-of-equilibrium processes, providing the potential for an alternative, less-energy-intensive pathway to synthesize ammonia. Here we show that gold-ruthenium (AuRu) bimetallic nanoparticles can synthesize ammonia at room temperature and pressure using visible light.

Cryogenic X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for battery interfaces - Nature
Abstract Understanding the chemical environment of pristine interfaces is a long-sought goal in electrochemistry, materials science and surface science. A substantial understanding of one such interface, the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in lithium anodes, originates from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)1,2. However, room temperature (RT) combined with ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) can induce major SEI evolution from reactions and volatilization during XPS1,2.

Role of Macrophage TLR4 Expression in the Immunopathogenesis of Severe Aplastic Anemia
1 Introduction Severe aplastic anemia (SAA) is a bone marrow failure caused by abnormalities in cellular immunity [1]. The immune mechanisms of aplastic anemia include an imbalance in the Th1/Th2 ratio under unknown antigen stimulation, increased secretion of hematopoietic negative regulators, proliferation, and excessive activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), which abnormally attack hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells and ultimately lead to bone marrow failure [2-5].

Stabilizing lithium-metal electrodes with polymer coatings - Nature Energy
Abstract Increasing the energy density of batteries can accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles, expand the utilization of renewable energy and, in turn, reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Different from commercially available lithium-ion batteries, high-energy-density lithium-metal batteries use metallic lithium instead of graphite as the negative electrode. The commercialization of lithium-metal batteries is hindered by the electrochemical instability of lithium metal.

Joint probabilistic shaping and pre-equalization for hollow-core fiber transmission using end-to-end learning
In this Letter, we propose a novel, to the best of our knowledge, end-to-end (E2E) learning scheme leveraging a time-frequency decoupling network (TFDnet) for joint probabilistic shaping (PS) and pre-equalization in hollow-core fiber (HCF)-based wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. The TFDnet emulator effectively models HCF transmission channels by decoupling signal impairments into high-frequency, linear, and nonlinear distortions.

Bose–Einstein condensation of a two-magnon bound state in a spin-1 triangular lattice - Nature Materials
Abstract In ordered magnets, the elementary excitations are spin waves (magnons), which obey Bose–Einstein statistics. Similarly to Cooper pairs in superconductors, magnons can be paired into bound states under attractive interactions. The Zeeman coupling to a magnetic field is able to tune the particle density through a quantum critical point, beyond which a ‘hidden order’ is predicted to exist.
Termination-acidity tailoring of molybdenum carbides for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction - Nature Communications
Abstract Transition-metal carbides have been advocated as the promising alternatives to noble-metal platinum-based catalysts in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction over half a century. However, the effectiveness of transition-metal carbides catalyzing hydrogen evolution in high-pH electrolyte is severely compromised due to the lowered proton activity and intractable alkaline-leaching issue of transition-metal centers.
Sub-cellular Imaging of the Entire Protein-Coding Human Transcriptome (18933-plex) on FFPE Tissue Using Spatial Molecular Imaging
Abstract Single-cell RNA-seq revolutionized single-cell biology, by providing a complete whole transcriptome view of individual cells. Regrettably, this was accomplished only for individual, tissue-dissociated cells. High-plex spatial biology has begun to recover the x, y, and z-coordinates of single-cells, but typically at the expense of far less than whole transcriptome coverage.
