Introduction Bloodstream infections (BSIs) can result in life-threatening conditions that include septicemia and remain a major cause of hospitalization and mortality for children, including neonates (Kontula et al., 2018; Lindell et al., 2020). The global BSIs incidence has risen significantly due to increased invasive procedures and widespread use of immunosuppressive agents (Kern and Rieg, 2020; Yang et al., 2023).

Highlights • Compared to adults, children have a lower ability to spread SARS-CoV-2. • Fecal viral shedding is long in pediatric COVID-19 patients. • Although the fecal nucleic acid test is positive, feces are not infectious in the later stages. • The new A958D mutation can theoretically improve SARS-CoV-2 thermostability. • The new A958D mutation can potentially prolong SARS-CoV-2 residence in the intestine.
