Yohji Yamamoto founded his company Y’s in Tokyo in 1972. His first runway show followed in 1977. The first collection, under the Y’s label, focused on womenswear that reflected typical men’s garments. The clothes were cut in uncluttered shapes, washed fabrics, and dark colors. He debuted his eponymous line in Paris in 1981, arriving with billows of dark fabric against the tight dresses and padded shoulders of the moment.
