Rise coach Cathy George moving to General Manager role

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The only woman to coach West Michigan's professional volleyball team is stepping away from the sideline, but Cathy George will remain an integral part of the Grand Rapids Rise. On Thursday, the team announced George was the new president and general manager for the franchise. In the roles, she will oversee the whole organization plus decide which women don the Phoenix logo.

Woman found dead inside burning home, tree branch blamed for starting fire

WAVERLY TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A woman was found dead inside her burning home Thursday morning. The fire was blamed on a tree branch that fell onto an electrical line. The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office says reports of the fire came in around 5:46 A.M. near 36th Avenue and 36th Street in Waverly Township. Paw Paw Fire Department Firefighters started a search of the home, finding the sole resident of the home already died from the fire.

Grand Rapids names four finalists in search for next police chief

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The City of Grand Rapids named four finalists in the search for the next chief of police. The finalists are: Mark Bliss, deputy chief with the Detroit Police Department. He has spent more than 25 years in law enforcement and currently leads Detroit's crime strategies bureau. Bliss holds a master's degree in criminal justice. XXX, a finalist for Grand Rapids Police Chief in 2026. Rafael Diaz, captain with Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
