Filbert's Root Beer in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood is turning 100 this year, and they attribute their longevity to a strategy many other businesses eschew: keeping it small. You could say Ronald Filbert has root beer in his veins. He is the third generation of Filberts to run the company. "My grandfather started in 1926. At that time, root beer was the most popular soft drink in the country," he said.

Muddy Waters' eldest son, Mud Morganfield, holding concert at Evanston Space for dad's birthday

Chicago blues legend Muddy Waters' birthday is Saturday, and in his memory his eldest son is putting on a concert in Chicago. Waters died more than 40 years ago, but this weekend's concert will be as close as you can get to seeing him live because it features his first-born son Mud Morganfield. "I was born into the blues," he aid. With a father like his, Morganfield said a career in music was inevitable. His love of blues started in childhood. "I got scolded for beating on furniture," he recalled.

"Trial in the Delta," a play inspired by Emmett Till, has run extended again in Humboldt Park

A play inspired by the story of Emmett Till has now been extended twice past its initial run at Collaboraction Theatre in Humboldt Park. "Trial in the Delta" is a recreation of the trial of the men who were acquitted of killing Emmett Till, but later admitted to it. The play is based on a transcript of the trial that was only discovered about 20 years ago.
