This article is a personal history of the background, ideas, and motivations behind the major discoveries from my lab in the past 27 years. Tracing the main themes back to my training as a graduate student and a postdoc, I discuss how all of our work has been influenced by a desire to use anatomical and computational literature to inspire and constrain the experimental questions we have addressed.

Average spatial frequency and orientation content of scaled images shown in each experiment. Figure S2. (A) The GAN can produce Gabor-like stimuli. Each pair of images shows a GAN-generated image at left (converted to grayscale for simplicity) and the best fitting Gabor function at right.

Classification of granule cells and mossy cells We recorded 420 well-isolated, putative excitatory cells from the DG granule cell layer and hilus of 35 male and female mice as they foraged for food in four distinct environments ( Figures S1 A and S1B). The environments consisted of two squares, one circle, and one octagon. Each environment had a unique color and texture on the floors and a unique color and cues on the walls ( Figures 1 A and S1 C).
