A suite of enhancer AAVs and transgenic mouse lines for genetic access to cortical cell types
|
Keywords epigenetics transcriptomics enhancer cell type neocortex AAV transgenic recombinase mouse human Introduction To understand how the brain works, we need to establish the structure-function relationships between the units that comprise it and the outputs of its activity.1 One approach is to gain experimental access to each building block (e.g., a cell type) and manipulate it to observe effects on an animal’s physiology and behavior.2,3,4 Historically, the definition of building blocks...

His day job bores him, and he never seems to be able to meet his family's expectations. The only escape he's ever had is his love of MMORPGs. But when he becomes the subject of a test without even knowing it, he's transported into a game-world called Eloria with no escape.
Tye Dillinger's Long, Strange Journey to WWE's Main Roster
There are few guarantees when you go to a wrestling show. Each one is unique, in different locations and different types of audiences. Over the past year though, there's been at least one guarantee. There's been one person that you will certainly hear referenced, even if he's not in the building. You can hear it though the pervasive "ten" chants that have spread through the entire world of wrestling. Everyone has Tye Dillinger on their tongues. It wasn't always that way though.
Christopher Daniels on Ending Wrestling's Longest World Title Dry Spell
Dan Marino, Patrick Ewing, Ted Williams. You might recognize those names as some of the greatest who never won a title in their respective sports. Christopher Daniels looked like he was going to be wrestling's addition to that list. A wrestler for nearly 25 years, Daniels was part of the very first Ring of Honor show in 2002 before going on to become a cornerstone of TNA Wrestling for the better part of a decade.
Real Story Behind MTV's Failed Attempt at Professional Wrestling
In January of 2007, the state of wrestling was in flux. The Monday Night Wars were a million miles in the rearview, leaving WWE the clear king of the mountain that was struggling to move forward in the post-Attitude Era. TNA had just started to pick up steam on Spike and Ring of Honor hadn't hit television yet. With WCW and ECW now part of Vince McMahon's company, there was no big name giving the WWE any trouble. Enter MTV and Wrestling Society X.
From Ring of Honor to Where: What's Next for Kyle O'Reilly?
Kyle O'Reilly was once a Canadian kid who dreamed of wrestling for Ring of Honor. Now, after achieving everything there is to do there, what's next for him on his wrestling journey?O'Reilly has been a mainstay in ROH since 2010. After a year of working low-level matches he joined with another newcomer, Adam Cole, someone who would become pivotal in his career. They were dubbed Future Shock, and some viewed them as two key pieces in the future of the company.
Shinsuke Nakamura Leads New Generation of Japanese Wrestlers in America
This past August, NXT Brooklyn 2 was hailed as one of the best wrestling shows of 2016. It was a thrilling night that was made up of a series of great moments. The three biggest of them (or maybe three of the four, considering Bobby Roode's entrance was truly glorious) were Shinsuke Nakamura winning the NXT title, Asuka retaining the NXT women's title over Bayley and Hideo Itami coming out and hitting a GTS on Austin Aries.
Gabe Sapolsky of Evolve Wrestling on Indies Influence
2016 has been a wild year in wrestling. We've seen huge names from outside of the WWE, like AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura get signed by WWE, more or less keep their characters, and take home championships in their new roles. We've seen the Cruiserweight Classic, where independent talent from all over the world come in and compete under the WWE banner. We've seen independent organizations partnering up, and major WWE stars choose to leave the company to compete on the independent scene.
Chad Gable: From Olympian to WWE Main Roster With American Alpha
Four years ago, Chas Betts was representing the United States in wrestling in the Olympics in London. Fast-forward to 2016, and he's still wearing the blue, but the blue is for Smackdown, as Chad Gable debuted on the main roster with his tag partner, Jason Jordan. American Alpha only started teaming together just over a year ago, but Gable and Jordan have burst on the wrestling scene in a major way, experiencing the kind of early pop young wrestlers can only dream of.
Damien Sandow on Signing With TNA
Just over three months after leaving WWE, the man formerly known as Damien Sandow is ready to return to the ring, and he will do so when he appears on Thursday night's Impact Wrestling. Rolling Stone had the chance to catch up with him, and find out exactly what made TNA an appealing landing spot."TNA just seemed like the perfect spot for me," Sandow, who went by Aaron Stevens when wrestling on the independent circuit in his time away says. "They are a growing company with a proven track record.
Adam Cole on Joining Bullet Club and Wrestling's Changing Landscape
If you somehow don't know Adam Cole's name, you may want to start paying attention.Adam Cole (BAYBAY as his fans may shout) is a former Ring of Honor World Champion. He was PWG champion as well as a winner of the prestigious Battle of Los Angeles. He's won titles all over the world, and has received numerous accolades from places like Wrestling Observer and Pro Wrestling Illustrated. He's considered to be one of the biggest independent wrestlers in the world, and has had the matches to back it up.
Roman Reigns Suspended For Wellness Policy Violation
Top superstar and former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns was suspended for 30 days today for a violation of the WWE Wellness Policy. Shortly after the announcement, Reigns tweeted out, "I apologize to my family, friends and fans for my mistake in violating WWE's wellness policy. No excuses, I own it." The WWE Wellness Policy was put into place in February 2006, shortly after the death of Eddie Guerrero.
Wrestling Legend Jerry 'The King' Lawler Suspended From WWE
WWE Hall of Famer and announcer Jerry "The King" Lawler was arrested on domestic assault charges Friday morning in Memphis, Tennessee. Lawler, 66, and his 27-year-old fiancée, Lauryn McBride, were both arrested after a dispute in his home. According to the affidavit, the two were involved in an argument that turned violent. The two told different stories to investigators, which is why both were arrested until facts could be cleared up.
Make Wrestling Great Again: Why Mixing Nostalgia, Politics Works So Well
The election season has tried to take over every aspect of our lives. We're bombarded with commercials on television, it's hard to go to work without talking about whatever the latest twist and turn is, you might check the polls obsessively and, as with all years, wrestling has found ways to comment on the election. Wrestling has a long-standing relationship with politics.
Damien Sandow on Life After WWE and His 'Thank You' Tour
Last week, several superstars were released by WWE. Fans reacted to all the cuts – in one way or another – but one in particular had them howling: the company's decision to part ways with Damien Sandow. That was undoubtedly a testament to his talents as both a wrestler and a performer, because over the span of his relatively brief WWE run, Sandow repeatedly showed that he could get just about anything over.
WWE 'Payback': Enzo Amore Goes Down, the Show Goes On
In the past, Payback has been an apt descriptor for a PPV that generally wrapped up storylines from WrestleMania season. But this year, Payback instead set the stage for WWE's future, lining up storylines that could carry the company all the way through the summer. In fact, moments after last night's main event had ended, the McMahon clan had already booked a rematch between Roman Reigns and A.J. Styles for the next PPV – Extreme Rules, which takes place in three weeks' time.
Remembering Chyna, the WWE Star Who Redefined the Rules
Joanie Laurer, the WWE star known to a generation of fans as Chyna, died Wednesday night at the age of 46, leaving behind a legacy as performer who redefined the role of women in wrestling. Billed as "The Ninth Wonder of the World," Chyna was truly a pioneer in wrestling. An imposing physical presence, she joined WWE in 1997, as Triple H's silent bodyguard, and later became part of the famous D-Generation X stable.
Lucha Underground's Queen of Death on Licking Faces and Kicking Asses
While WWE seems to have only recently rediscovered women's wrestling, Lucha Underground has made powerful females a priority since it premiered in 2014 – and none may be more powerful than Catrina, who has ascended to the top of the Temple and left a path of destruction in her wake.
Ringside at 'WrestleMania 32': Bigger, But Not Necessarily Better
They had to have a dark segment to mollify the crowd. That's all I could think about as I walked up the steps at AT&T Stadium after the conclusion of WrestleMania, the biggest night of the sports entertainment year. The show that, for the most part, WWE manages to get right. Last night, they had to resort to playing to the crowd after the broadcast ended, just so the boos and "bullshit" chants would stop.
Here Comes the Money: How to Bet on 'WrestleMania 32'
We've made it, wrestling fans. We've zipped through Fastlane and avoided the Roadblock, taken the good with the booty, survived that month where Sheamus was champ – and we've finally arrived at WrestleMania. OK, so it's not actually happening until Sunday, but you can understand my enthusiasm –'Mania is unquestionably the biggest event of the sports entertainment year, a blockbuster that truly has something for everyone.
Mean Steet Posse's Pete Gas on Shane McMahon's WWE Return
Last week, Shane McMahon shook up the wrestling world when he returned to Raw after a near seven-year absence. While it was a surprise to pretty much everyone, it's quite possible no one was more shocked than one of his best friends, the man the WWE Universe came to know as Pete Gas. Pete Gasparino first became pals with Shane-O Mac when they were teammates on the high school football team.
Kenny Omega Has Conquered Japan, Now He Wants the New Day
In January, when news broke that four wrestlers – including top stars A.J. Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura – would be leaving New Japan Pro-Wrestling, many wondered how the promotion could possibly replace them. Would longtime stars Okada and Tanahashi fill the void, or would NJPW turn to someone new to shoulder the load? So far, it's been the latter – and that someone new is Kenny Omega.
Chikara: Pro Wrestling's Comic Book Turns the Page
He had previously turned his back on his fellow arthropods – a group known as the Colony – and was now supposed to destroy former friend Fire Ant, though judging by the way his tiny antennae was twitching, he was struggling with the task at hand. The crowd surrounding the ring picked up on his hesitation, begged him to remember his past and break free of the bonds that had caused him to go bad. Fire Ant begged too.
Donald Trump and WWE: From 'WrestleMania' to the White House?
That's how Vince McMahon began his speech inducting The Donald into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013, and while "institution" may have been pushing it (at least judging by the response Trump got when he took the stage), there is no doubt that both sides have had a long – and interesting – relationship, one that stretches back nearly 30 years.
Pentagon Jr: 'Lucha Underground's Bad Guy Is Out for Blood
In 2015, Lucha Underground became the best-kept secret in pro wrestling. Part upstart promotion, part pulpy TV drama, the show – which airs on the El Rey Network – paired some of the best luchadors from Mexico with top indie talent from the U.S., spun stories that involved a mysterious millionaire owner, powerful Aztec medallions and undead warriors and presented it all in a stylized, big-screen format. The result was a wrestling program unlike any other: brash, bold and very often brutal.
Jake the Snake Wants to Save Johnny Manziel's Life
Ever since he entered the NFL, much has been made of Johnny Manziel's partying ways. Last year, he voluntarily entered rehab and vowed to clean up his act, but several incidents – including a roadside fight with his girlfriend and a pair of videos that appeared to show him consuming alcohol – seemed to suggest otherwise. Despite all that, the Cleveland Browns stuck by their quarterback.
A.J. Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura and Bullet Club: WWE Goes for Broke
At Monday night's Wrestle Kingdom 10, A.J. Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura faced each other for the first time. Little did we know that just hours after their match – which ended with a show of respect between the two mainstays – the possibility arose that we'd soon see them competing in an even bigger arena: Vince McMahon's WWE.
NXT Made the Leap in 2015 - Now, the Sky's the Limit
After a breakout 2014, NXT was touted as a bright and shining example of what WWE could be. Following a staggering 2015, it surpassed its potential – by becoming the best thing in WWE, period. Simply put, NXT arrived this year. The phrase we heard uttered by wrestlers and executives alike was that NXT was becoming its own brand, and looking back, it's difficult to argue otherwise.
'NXT TakeOver: London' Recap - Finn Balor Reigns Down on Samoa Joe
NXT TakeOver: London confirmed one thing. You can change the faces, you can change the location, you can even change the time – but you can't change the brand. Over the past year, plenty has changed in NXT. Stars have moved up to the main roster, crowds have gotten larger, expectations have gone through the roof. This is no longer a developmental…not even close.
Chikara Grand Champion KimberLee: 'This Is the Real Divas Revolution'
On Saturday night, fans packed the former ECW Arena in Philadelphia to see Chikara's season finale, an event dubbed Top Banana. What they didn't know was that they'd also witness history. At the end of the night, KimberLee won Chikara's Grand Championship, the company's top title. It was the culmination of a yearlong team competition that saw her lead a squad of underdogs to victory, thereby granting her and her teammates a golden opportunity: A chance to challenge for any belt.
Brad Maddox on the Line That Got Him Fired From WWE
Last week, the WWE career of Brad Maddox came to an end. And it was somewhat fitting that it happened when he wasn't on television. After all, when Maddox was called up to WWE in 2012, the promotion came after a promising run in the company's developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling, where he had won the tag titles twice and was the final holder of the FCW 15 title before the NXT rebranding. So it was a surprise to some when he debuted as a referee in WWE.
Tyler Breeze: NXT's Prince Pretty on Making His Mark in WWE
Prince Pretty. Breezus. The King of Cuteville. The Gorgeous One. The Sultan of Selfies. Tyler Breeze already had more nicknames than Shaquille O'Neal, but now, the NXT stalwart can add another one to the list: WWE Superstar. After five years in WWE's developmental system, Breeze finally got the call-up late last month, debuting on SmackDown with selfie stick aloft and Summer Rae in tow.
NXT 'TakeOver: Respect' - Bayley and Sasha Banks Go the Distance
In the lead-up to NXT TakeOver: Respect, we heard all about the historical importance of the main event, a 30-minute "Iron Man" rematch between Women's Champion Bayley and challenger Sasha Banks. And rightfully so; they were the first women to ever headline a WWE special event, an opportunity earned thanks to their show-stealing bout at TakeOver: Brooklyn and a rivalry that stretches back more than two years.
Okada: Wrestling's 'Rainmaker' Has Conquered Japan - Is America Next?
Over the past few years, wrestling in the United States has truly gone international. Lucha Underground and Chikara have helped raise interest in Mexican lucha libre, WWE talents like Neville, Finn Bálor, Paige and Becky Lynch have drawn eyes to Ireland and the U.K. and companies like Germany's Westside Xtreme and New Zealand's Impact Pro have entered into partnerships with Stateside promotions. But nothing has exploded quite like New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
Finn Balor: The Demon Comes to Brooklyn
Last summer, WWE made a splash when it signed a trio of wrestlers to its nascent developmental promotion, NXT. One was Kevin Steen, a former Ring of Honor champion who would go on to make a serious impact as Kevin Owens. The second was Japanese legend KENTA, who would move up the ladder – even competing at WrestleMania – as Hideo Itami. The third was Fergal Devitt, an international star who was worshiped by diehards, but remained a mystery to most WWE fans.
Where's Trent Baretta? A Wrestler's Journey From WWE to Roppongi Vice
Many wrestlers have come and gone in WWE throughout the years. Some of them fade away when they leave, others burn bright, becoming even bigger stars on the indie circuit. Trent Baretta falls into the latter category. He broke in to Vince McMahon's company as one half of the Dudebusters, a short-lived tag team that got lost in the shuffle. Eventually, he ended up in NXT, which definitely wasn't the powerhouse promotion it's become today.
Rey Mysterio Comes Full Circle: Life, Death and Rebirth in Wrestling
In November 1994, a young wrestler named Rey Mysterio Jr. was introduced to audiences in the United States at When Worlds Collide, a collaborative pay-per-view between Mexico's AAA organization and World Championship Wrestling. At the time, Chris Cruise, one of the broadcasters, proclaimed that Mysterio represented the future of Mexican wrestling. Little did he know that the man in the mask would actually become the future of wrestling worldwide.
Blue Pants: NXT's Cosplay Queen Moves From the Clearance Rack
Last week on NXT, champion Sasha Banks had a dilemma: She was set to face Emma and Dana Brooke, but didn't have a partner. The tension mounted and the fans at Full Sail began chanting for one wrestler to come to her aid – but it wasn't Becky Lynch or Charlotte, the two women who would join Banks on Monday's historic Raw, and it wasn't the lovable Bayley. They were chanting for Blue Pants. It was just the latest weird chapter in the career of Leva Bates.
Magnus No More: Nick Aldis on TNA Turmoil and Joining Jeff Jarrett
Nick Aldis – formerly known as Magnus – just wrestled his final match for TNA at last month's Slammiversary, ending a six-and-a-half year run with the company that saw him rise from generic enforcer to World Champion. His departure comes during a time of turmoil for TNA, which has been rocked by rumors of canceled TV deals and an exodus of top stars, including James Storm and Austin Aries.
Jay Lethal: The Champ Is (Finally) Here
Jay Lethal has been a mainstay on pro wrestling's indie circuit for more than 12 years, since making his Ring of Honor debut in 2003. Some discovered him then, or soon after, when he portrayed Samoa Joe's protégé and became ROH Pure Champion. Others discovered him when he moved to TNA, and became one of the cornerstones of the X Division. While in TNA, he made waves for becoming Black Machismo, his over-the-top homage to "Macho Man" Randy Savage.
Jeff Jarrett's Grand Plan for Global Force Wrestling
Jeff Jarrett has been a wrestling mainstay for nearly 30 years. From his time in WWF and WCW to his reign as "King of the Mountain" in TNA – the promotion he co-founded in 2002 – Double J has long been the man with the stroke, both both inside the ring and behind the scenes. But when he left TNA in early 2014, it seemed that we might have seen the last of Jarrett in the business he was born into.
Young Bucks on Kevin Owens, Keeping It Indie and Vince McMahon's Money
The "King of the Indies" title has been bestowed on many wrestlers over the years. CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and Kevin Owens have all laid claim to the distinction before making the leap to WWE. Right now, the honor probably belongs to two men – brothers Matt and Nick Jackson – better known to smart fans everywhere as the Young Bucks. Working as a tag team, the Bucks have been wrestling together for over a decade, and they've been just about everywhere – except for the WWE.
NXT Recap: Will Becky Lynch Break the Boss?
In a Number One contender's match for the NXT women's title, it wasn't the former champion Charlotte that won. It wasn't the beloved Bayley either. Instead, it was Becky Lynch who earned the win – and took the next step in one of the most fascinating careers in wrestling. Before we look further at Lynch, it's worth pointing out that the NXT Divas once again put on a great show. It's often said that a triple-threat match can be one the toughest to execute in wrestling.
NXT, Where the Women Work
This week, following a shockingly short Divas match – even by WWE standards – on Raw, #GiveDivasAChance began trending on Twitter. On Wednesday night, NXT showed once again why that hashtag would never be directed at its show. On the surface, the match between Bayley and Becky Lynch was nothing out of the ordinary: From first entrances – yes, both entrances were shown in full, a rarity these days for main roster Divas matches – to final bell, it spanned just seven minutes.
