She was elected president of the International Olympic Committee in the first round of balloting in March 2025. Coventry, who is from Zimbabwe, formally took over as president a year ago this week from Thomas Bach, who had led the organization for 12 years, and the symbolism of her presidency is considerable. She is the first female president in IOC history. The first from Africa.
