The disasters we talk about shape our priorities and determine our preparedness
In December 1989, the United Nations declared Oct. 13 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. At the time, the aim was to make disaster-risk reduction part of everyday thinking worldwide. Today, this mission is more urgent than ever as disasters strike more often and with greater force. And although substantial progress has been made, there is still much to achieve in reducing disaster risks and their impacts.

AI-generated misinformation can create confusion and hinder responses during emergencies Original
In one of the first communications of its kind, the British Columbia Wildfire Service has issued a warning to residents about viral, AI-generated fake wildfire images circulating online. Judging by comments made by viewers on social media, some people did not realize the images were not authentic. As more advanced generative AI (genAI) tools become freely accessible, these incidents will increase.

Uncovering the impact of infection routes on within-host MPXV dynamics: Insights from a mathematical modeling study
Discussion and conclusion Although MPXV has been identified for several years, the macaque model remains an ideal system for understanding the pathogenesis of MPXV. Investigating in vivo viral dynamics is crucial for uncovering patterns of virus transmission and aiding in the development of effective control strategies. Despite MPXV being known for some time, its within-host viral dynamics have not been extensively studied.
Vancouver SUV attack exposes crowd management falldowns and casts a pall on Canada’s election
A car attack at a Filipino street festival in Vancouver just two days before Canada’s federal election has killed at least 11 people and injured many more. The carnage along a street lined with food trucks took place shortly after one of the men vying to become Canada’s prime minister — New Democratic Party Leader Jagmeet Singh — attended the event. A shell-shocked Singh observed a moment of silence in Penticton, B.C., during another campaign stop the next day.
Why Trump’s Gaza reconstruction proposal is unlikely to work
THERE have been many conversations around U.S. President Donald Trump’s Gaza proposal to permanently displace Palestinians from Gaza to neighbouring countries and turn the strip into a luxury resort development. Criticisms of Trump’s comments often focus on the proposal’s illegality, immorality and impracticality. However, little has been discussed from the perspective of post-disaster and post-war reconstruction.

The use of drones during wildfires can disrupt response operations
Unauthorized and irresponsible use of drones in wildfire zones can create problems for firefighting aircraft, as seen in a recent collision during the Los Angeles wildfires. A Canadian Super Scooper aircraft assisting with the wildfire suppression was grounded after being hit by a drone. This incident forced a temporary halt on all air response operations for at least half an hour. Officials in Southern California have requested that people not fly drones in the wildfire zones.

The Jasper fire highlights the risks climate change poses to Canada's world heritage sites
Climate change and extreme weather events pose a real risk to the world's heritage sites—a stark reality laid bare by the recent wildfire in Jasper, Alta. Canada has 22 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) world heritage sites, most of which are at high risk of disruption due to climate change and their particularly vulnerable location.

Spatiotemporal Analysis of Emergency Calls during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Case of the City of Vaughan
4. Discussion The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted societal functions and activities and demand for municipal services were impacted as a result of that as well. Emergency calls that are one of the key services that cities provide were particularly impacted in many different ways. In this study, we applied spatial and spatiotemporal analyses to demonstrate the usefulness of these tools in showing the changing patterns of emergency calls during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Opinion: We need to prepare for the public safety hazards posed by artificial intelligence
For the most part, the focus of contemporary emergency management has been on natural, technological and human-made hazards such as flooding, earthquakes, tornadoes, industrial accidents, extreme weather events and cyber attacks. However, with the increase in the availability and capabilities of artificial intelligence, we may soon see emerging public safety hazards related to these technologies that we will need to mitigate and prepare for.

Mauna Loa eruption in Hawaii: How to stay safe while visiting volcanoes Original
On Nov. 27, the Big Island of Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano — the largest active volcano in the world — erupted for the first time in 38 years. This eruption was very special because Mauna Loa historically erupts very frequently, every six years on average. As the director of CIFAL York, Canada’s first hub for the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), I recently attended the global CIFAL directors’ meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii organized by UNITAR and CIFAL Honolulu.
