Years ago, at the beginning of a sojourn in South Africa, I heard an elderly woman use the word “picannin” to describe an African child. Picannin, I thought, surely that’s Aboriginal, and with a “y” on the end. So I went to the Shorter Oxford Dictionary. Little black one, it said, derived from two Spanish or Portuguese words and coined in the Caribbean; now used only in Australia and South Africa. So words are maverick. They can stay wedged in a place or jump oceans — or even both.

In 2022, both Macquarie Dictionary and the Australian National Dictionary Centre named teal as their word of the year. Referring to the independent candidates who had great success in the 2022 federal election, the term was everywhere. There was discussion of the teal wave, a teal revolution and an electoral tealslide.

In the introduction to their excellent collection of essays, Class in Australia (2022), Jessica Gerrard and Steven Threadgold note the eclipsing of the word class in our public discourse. Other descriptive markers are more commonly used, words such as disadvantage (by scholars) and bogan (in popular culture). In my own work on the Australian English lexicon, I have been intrigued by the contemporary language of class.
