Ana Leorne (Porto, 1984) is a writer, artist, and researcher. She has started her career as a musician (Rope, The Clits, Annette Blade, Portuguese cast of RENT) while completing a BA in Fine Arts at University of Porto and producing work in the fields of photography, video, installation, and performance. She also holds a MA in Film Studies from NOVA University of Lisbon with a dissertation on psychoanalysis and Stanley Kubrick, and a PhD in Visual Cultures from EHESS with a dissertation on issu…

Desde pequenos que aprendemos a reconhecer aquele friozinho na barriga. Não me refiro ao pânico total, aos suores frios, à urgência de correr para a casa de banho para evacuar (por um lado ou por outro) tudo o que está lá dentro e que parece não sossegar. Refiro-me àquele que é gerível, que se for navegado até dá um formigueiro bom, um gostinho de pré-êxtase que provamos antes mesmo de sabermos o que é êxtase (Freud discordaria).

Há 25 anos estava a começar o 11º ano. É sempre um ano estranho, porque já não se está naquele nervosinho de início de secundário e ainda não paira a nuvem de stress permanente dos exames nacionais. Uma espécie de ano-nada. Enquanto nadávamos colectivamente num intervalo bizarro entre Y2K e 9/11, a banda sonora reflectia essa crise de identidade cultural que surge sempre que uma década vaza para o início da seguinte. Era suposto sentirmos euforia? Apreensão? Optimismo? Ansiedade?

Esta altura do ano costuma ser feita de reencontros, mais ou menos agradáveis, mais ou menos inesperados. A silly season existe numa espécie de realidade paralela, e encontrar um romance de verão no autocarro das sete seria tão embaraçoso como dar de caras com o patrão da empresa em speedo laranja e lamber um Magnum de amêndoas na praia. Mas o regresso às lides também implica voltar a encarar uma série de dissabores que preferiríamos terem sido apenas boato da reacção.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

yep, all my assignments were typed at least until my 2nd year in Uni.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

customised cms vary from site to site, but for text I use pages. i do carry a plain ol white notebook around though.

Why did you become a journalist?

I genuinely have no idea. one day about ten years ago I woke up and I just needed to write. I haven't stopped since.
