MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Thursday marks five years since the passing of Alabama native and former U.S. Rep. John Lewis. Lewis was born the son of sharecroppers in Pike Countyin 1940. At age 25, Lewis led hundreds of protesters in the 1965 Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma and was beaten by police, suffering a skull fracture. He was first elected to Congress in 1986.
