Plant diversity modifies multi-trophic interactions in croplands, grasslands and forests
Abstract INTRODUCTION RESULTS AND DISCUSSION MATERIALS AND METHODS Acknowledgments Supplementary Materials REFERENCES Information & Authors Metrics & Citations View Options References Figures Tables Media Share Abstract Multitrophic interactions can strongly influence the structure and functioning of ecosystems, but how plant diversity influences the direction and predictability of multitrophic interactions across agricultural and natural ecosystems remains unclear.

Trophic cascades drive sustainability in the agricultural heritage rice-fish coculture system
|
The original Figure 1 in this paper included a world map featuring national boundary lines that were not germane to the subject of the figure. In response to recent reader concerns about some of these boundary lines, we have corrected Figure 1 in the original article so that it includes the relevant scientific data without the distraction of national boundary lines. The authors apologize for any confusion.

Liana cutting accelerates the structural recovery of once-logged tropical forests at a fraction of the cost of tree planting
Keywords forest restoration liana cutting tree planting forest structure dipterocarps Borneo LiDAR carbon Introduction Over the past century, vast portions of the world’s tropical forests have been fragmented and selectively logged, leaving more than half of all remaining tropical forests in a degraded state.1 Restoring these degraded forests is essential to limit global warming to 2°C and prevent further biodiversity loss.2,3 Indeed, tropical forest restoration is widely recognized as one of...
Predicting temporal stability and resilience from resistance and recovery
|
Abstract Stability can be desirable for many natural and social systems. Temporal stability, the invariability of a system over time, can be enhanced by resisting displacement during perturbations, accelerating recovery after them, or both1,2,3,4. Likewise, resilience (sensu proximity to unperturbed levels after a perturbation5,6,7,8,9,10) also has components of withstanding (resistance) and recovering after perturbations11,12.

Mycorrhizal associations modify tree diversity−productivity relationships across experimental tree plantations
Introduction Global environmental changes affect the diversity, composition, and functioning of ecosystems, invoking research to evaluate the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF; Loreau et al., 2001; Hooper et al., 2005; Tilman et al., 2014). Many studies have demonstrated that greater tree species richness can increase forest productivity (Zhang et al., 2012; Huang et al., 2018; Ammer, 2019; Feng et al., 2022).
Tree growth and survival are more sensitive to high rainfall than drought in an aseasonal forest in Malaysia - Communications Earth & Environment
Abstract Global change research has largely focused on the effects of drought on forest dynamics while the importance of excessive rainfall that can cause waterlogged soils has largely been assessed in riparian zones or seasonally flooded sites. However, increased rainfall may also cause decreased growth and survival of tree species in lowland aseasonal tropical forests due to increased risk from potentially more extensive and frequent waterlogged soils.
Effects of plant diversity on productivity strengthen over time due to trait-dependent shifts in species overyielding - Nature Communications
|
Abstract Plant diversity effects on community productivity often increase over time. Whether the strengthening of diversity effects is caused by temporal shifts in species-level overyielding (i.e., higher species-level productivity in diverse communities compared with monocultures) remains unclear.

Do the rich get richer? Varying effects of tree species identity and diversity on the richness of understory taxa
Understory herbs and soil invertebrates play key roles in soil formation and nutrient cycling in forests. Studies suggest that diversity in the canopy and in the understory are positively associated, but these studies often confound the effects of tree species diversity with those of tree species identity and abiotic conditions.
