Vegetation browning patterns under compound soil and atmospheric dryness in northern permafrost ecosystems
Abstract Significant changes in vegetation greenness and browning have been observed across the northern permafrost zone, with important implications for ecosystem functioning and carbon uptake. While recent research has improved our understanding of the drivers of greening, the processes behind browning – especially the low-stature shrubs and herbaceous vegetation, which is more directly exposed to soil and atmospheric moisture deficits – remain less clear.
Flash flourishing of Northern Hemisphere vegetation and its drivers - npj Climate and Atmospheric Science
Abstract Rapid surges in vegetation growth—defined by thresholds in growth rate and duration—are critical yet understudied indicators of ecosystem responses to environmental change. Here, we investigate spatiotemporal patterns of such abrupt, short-lived flash flourishing events across the northern extratropical latitudes (NEL) from 2003 to 2022. We find more frequent occurrence of flash flourishing events at high latitudes (≥45° N), where their incidence is 1.6 times higher than at mid-latitudes.
Forest Carbon Dynamics as a Constraint on Future Land‐Use and Land‐Cover Change
Land use and land cover change (LULCC) represents one of the most consequential dimensions of global environmental change, with far-reaching impacts on the carbon cycle, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the climate system. Yet projecting future LULCC remains a daunting challenge (Friedlingstein et al. 2025) as land-use decisions are co-determined by both biophysical and socioeconomic constraints, often involving complex trade-offs between competing demands (Lee et al. 2023; Winkler et al.

Satellite-based evidence of recent decline in global forest recovery rate from tree mortality events - Nature Plants
Abstract Climate-driven forest mortality events have been extensively observed in recent decades, prompting the question of how quickly these affected forests can recover their functionality following such events. Here we assessed forest recovery in vegetation greenness (normalized difference vegetation index) and canopy water content (normalized difference infrared index) for 1,699 well-documented forest mortality events across 1,600 sites worldwide.
Asymmetric sensitivity of boreal forest resilience to forest gain and loss - Nature Ecology & Evolution
Abstract Forest gains and losses may have unequal effects on forest resilience, particularly given their distinct temporal dynamics. Here, we quantify the sensitivities of boreal forest resilience to forest cover gain and loss using a resilience indicator derived from the temporal autocorrelation (TAC) of the kernel normalized difference vegetation index from 2000 to 2020.
Phenological divergence between plants and animals under climate change - Nature Ecology & Evolution
Abstract Climate change has altered the timing of recurring biological cycles in both plants and animals. Phenological changes may be unequal within and among trophic levels, potentially impacting the intricate interactions that regulate ecosystem functioning. Here we compile and analyse a global dataset of terrestrial phenological observations, including nearly half a million time series for both plants and animals.

Large language models reveal big disparities in current wildfire research - Communications Earth & Environment
Abstract Contemporary fire-human-climate nexus has led to a surge in publication numbers across diverse research disciplines beyond the capability of experts from a single discipline. Here, we employed a generalized large language model to capture the dynamics of wildfire research published between 1980 and 2022. More than 60,000 peer-reviewed papers were scanned and analyzed.
Integrating ecosystem water demands into drought monitoring and assessment under climate change - Nature Water
Research on the ecological impacts of drought has predominantly focused on the scarcity of water supply, often overlooking divergent ecosystem water demands across vegetation types, regions, and time. These diverse ecosystem water demands need to be incorporated into an effective ecological drought monitoring and assessment framework. Droughts are periods of persistent deficit in water supply compared to demand, exerting extensive impacts on ecosystems and human societies1,2.
Climate-induced tree-mortality pulses are obscured by broad-scale and long-term greening - Nature Ecology & Evolution
Abstract Vegetation greening has been suggested to be a dominant trend over recent decades, but severe pulses of tree mortality in forests after droughts and heatwaves have also been extensively reported. These observations raise the question of to what extent the observed severe pulses of tree mortality induced by climate could affect overall vegetation greenness across spatial grains and temporal extents.
Fertilizer management for global ammonia emission reduction - Nature
Abstract Crop production is a large source of atmospheric ammonia (NH3), which poses risks to air quality, human health and ecosystems1,2,3,4,5. However, estimating global NH3 emissions from croplands is subject to uncertainties because of data limitations, thereby limiting the accurate identification of mitigation options and efficacy4,5.

Diminishing carryover benefits of earlier spring vegetation growth - Nature Ecology & Evolution
Abstract Spring vegetation growth can benefit summer growth by increasing foliage area and carbon sequestration potential, or impair it by consuming additional resources needed for sustaining subsequent growth. However, the prevalent driving mechanism and its temporal changes remain unknown.
Accounting for herbaceous communities in process‐based models will advance our understanding of “grassy” ecosystems
1 INTRODUCTION Herbaceous and grass-dominated ecosystems are critical components of Earth's land surface (Faber-Langendoen et al., 2016), occupying a large proportion of Earth's ice-free terrestrial surface (Dixon et al., 2014; White et al., 2000) and providing many important ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, livestock grazing, and wildlife habitat (Bai & Cotrufo, 2022; Gibson, 2009).

Widespread spring phenology effects on drought recovery of Northern Hemisphere ecosystems - Nature Climate Change
Abstract The time required for an ecosystem to recover from severe drought is a key component of ecological resilience. The phenology effects on drought recovery are, however, poorly understood. These effects centre on how phenology variations impact biophysical feedbacks, vegetation growth and, ultimately, recovery itself.
Rewetting global wetlands effectively reduces major greenhouse gas emissions - Nature Geoscience
Abstract Carbon and nitrogen losses from degraded wetlands and methane emissions from flooded wetlands are both important sources of greenhouse gas emissions. However, the net-exchange dependence on hydrothermal conditions and wetland integrity remains unclear. Using a global-scale in situ database on net greenhouse gas exchanges, we show diverse hydrology-influenced emission patterns in CO2, CH4 and N2O.
Policy-enabled stabilization of nitrous oxide emissions from livestock production in China over 1978–2017 - Nature Food
Abstract Mitigating livestock-related nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions is key for China to meet its 2060 carbon neutrality target. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of the magnitude, spatiotemporal variation and drivers of Chinese livestock N2O emissions from 1978 to 2017. We developed scenarios to explore emissions mitigation potential and associated marginal abatement costs and social benefits.
Multifaceted characteristics of dryland aridity changes in a warming world
Abstract Drylands are an essential component of the Earth System and are among the most vulnerable to climate change. In this Review, we synthesize observational and modelling evidence to demonstrate emerging differences in dryland aridity dependent on the specific metric considered.
Seasonal biological carryover dominates northern vegetation growth
Abstract The state of ecosystems is influenced strongly by their past, and describing this carryover effect is important to accurately forecast their future behaviors. However, the strength and persistence of this carryover effect on ecosystem dynamics in comparison to that of simultaneous environmental drivers are still poorly understood.
Resolving the Dust Bowl paradox of grassland responses to extreme drought
Significance During the Dust Bowl drought, central US grasslands responded unexpectedly to a decade of hot, dry conditions. Grass species adapted to high temperatures with higher water use efficiency (C4 grasses) decreased, while those preferring cooler climates (C3 grasses) increased. We reproduced this surprising response by experimentally imposing extreme drought in two native grasslands.

Characteristics, drivers and feedbacks of global greening
Abstract Vegetation greenness has been increasing globally since at least 1981, when satellite technology enabled large-scale vegetation monitoring. The greening phenomenon, together with warming, sea-level rise and sea-ice decline, represents highly credible evidence of anthropogenic climate change. In this Review, we examine the detection of the greening signal, its causes and its consequences.
A reversal in global terrestrial stilling and its implications for wind energy production
Abstract Wind power, a rapidly growing alternative energy source, has been threatened by reductions in global average surface wind speed, which have been occurring over land since the 1980s, a phenomenon known as global terrestrial stilling. Here, we use wind data from in situ stations worldwide to show that the stilling reversed around 2010 and that global wind speeds over land have recovered.
Highland cropland expansion and forest loss in Southeast Asia in the twenty-first century
Southeast Asia is a hotspot of tropical deforestation for agriculture. Most of the deforestation is thought to occur in lowland forests, whereas the region’s mountainous highlands undergo very limited deforestation. However, regional reports of cropland expansion in some highland areas suggest that this assumption is inaccurate.
