Results We diagnostically evaluated 15-year-old fraternal twins with a history of motor delay and scoliosis. At birth, the twins presented with hypotonia, hip dysplasia, and respiratory difficulty. A three-generation pedigree had no history of consanguinity or neuromuscular disorders other than action tremor (Figure 1A). The mother and father recalled the twins had some abnormal limb positioning from an early age and were delayed in walking, but they had stable motor function since adolescence.

Ardem Patapoutian is professor of neuroscience and Presidential Endowed Chair in Neurobiology at Scripps Research. He is a molecular biologist specializing in sensory transduction, and his research has led to the identification of receptors activated by temperature and pressure. His laboratory has shown that these ion channels play crucial roles in sensing temperature, touch, proprioception, pain, and blood pressure. Patapoutian is an American scientist of Armenian origin.
