Biola Community Commemorates 100th Annual Reaffirmation of Articles of Faith

On September 18, 2026, a robust representation of the Biola community gathered in Calvary Chapel on Biola’s campus to witness members of the Biola University Board of Trustees, along with faculty and staff, pen their signatures on the pages of the Biola University “Workers' Register and Articles of Faith,” fondly referred to as the “Red Book,” signifying the 100th time this historic tradition has been observed.

Editor’s Note: A Forgotten Founder

I gained a new Biola hero while writing this issue’s cover story. S.I. Merrill is a name I hadn’t en-countered before, and I suspect you haven’t either. Unlike other key figures from Biola’s history, his name isn’t attached to any campus buildings or memorialized in the titles of any programs. But thanks to extensive research from Biola historian Paul Rood, Merrill’s story has recently been uncovered (and made available at biola.edu/magazine/merrill.) Let me share just a bit of it here.

President’s Perspective: The Young Men Who Give Me Hope

I love all our Biola students. I have for now 19 years. When I’m having a heavy day from the normal stressors, I walk out the office door and descend the steps of Metzger Hall to the outside world. There they are. Students! Rushing to class. Playing Spikeball. Coming and going from Heritage Café. Heading to chapel. Conversing on benches. My days are always lifted when I spend time with our students, and my administrative fast-panting becomes pastoral deep-breathing.
