Evacuations ordered at Fort Robinson State Park as wildfire burns in Nebraska Panhandle

CHADRON, Neb. (KNOP) - Emergency personnel issued mandatory evacuations for Fort Robinson State Park on Wednesday evening as a wildfire continued burning in the Nebraska Panhandle. Those living in areas west of Dodd Road and south of Cottonwood Road were also ordered to evacuate. Sioux County residents living in areas south of Highway 20 to 4 Mile Road were advised to prepare to evacuate as well. Authorities were referring evacuees to Chadron, Alliance, or Scottsbluff.

Fast-moving wildfire shuts Nebraska highway

CHADRON, Neb. (KNOP) - A fast-moving wildfire in the Nebraska Panhandle has forced the closure of Highway 20 and burned roughly 800 acres. The South Fork Fire broke out around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday near the Soldier Creek Wilderness in the Nebraska National Forest’s Pine Ridge Ranger District. High winds drove the flames across Highway 20, which remains closed. Dead timber and downed debris from previous wildfires are feeding the blaze. A red flag warning remains in effect through Wednesday evening.

Red Cross ends platelet collections at Grand Island, North Platte centers

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - The American Red Cross is ending platelet collections at its Grand Island and North Platte donation centers. The last day to donate platelets at those sites is June 30. Starting July 1, both locations will still accept whole blood donations. Red Cross officials said the change is about getting platelets closer to hospitals to extend their shelf life and managing costs. Officials said the move will not impact the availability of blood products for patients.
