Immediate increases in oil and fuel prices underline the need to give the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) stronger and faster enforcement powers, a Fine Gael TD has said. Fine Gael TD for Offaly and Member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, John Clendennen, made his submission on the public consultation on enhancing the CCPC last week – before war broke out in the Middle East and fuel prices escalated.

Famine Officially Declared In Gaza A United Nations-backed body has confirmed there's a famine in Gaza City and the surrounding areas. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification comes to that conclusion when at least 20% of people suffer extreme food shortages. One in three children are acutely malnourished and two out of every 10,000 are dying daily from starvation and disease. Israel rejects the findings, alleging it's based on "false and biased" information.

Oasis Return To Ireland For The First Time In 16 Years Oasis are preparing to play to 160,000 people at Croke Park this weekend. It's the first time they'll play Dublin in 20 years - the last time was Marlay Park in July 2005. The gates open tomorrow at 5pm with Cast and Richard Ashcroft as the support acts. Oasis are due on stage around 8.15pm on both Saturday and Sunday. If you're lucky enough to be going, the promoter is encouraging people to use public transport.
