Three deaths on a cruise ship: what we know about the Andean hantavirus
The MV Hondius cruise ship, where a hantavirus outbreak began that killed three passengers and infected at least five others, left Cape Verde on May 6. It is due to arrive in Tenerife, in the Spanish Canary Islands, on May 9. From there, the evacuation of passengers, including some Canadians, is expected to begin on May 11. The strain that caused the outbreak is the Andes virus, the only one in the hantavirus group that is transmissible between humans, notably through saliva droplets and urine.

Here’s how to remove some persistent pollutants from your drinking water at home Original
Many substances harmful to human health are finding their way into our drinking water. These include the so-called ‘forever chemicals,’ per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). A group of fluorinated chemical compounds, they are resistant to degradation, bioaccumulate in tissues, and are highly mobile in the environment.
Applying Recurrent Neural Networks and Blocked Cross-Validation to Model Conventional Drinking Water Treatment Processes
1. Introduction In a conventional drinking water treatment (DWT) plant, the unit processes of coagulation and flocculation, followed by clarification and filtration, are primarily responsible for removing large colloidal particles and natural organic matter from water [1]. The success of these downstream processes depends on the effective agglomeration of particles into flocs in the upstream coagulation and flocculation processes.

Origins of COVID-19: Why the Lab Leak Idea Is Being Considered Again
Benoit Barbeau | June 13th, 2021 One of the first scenarios put forward — that the Wuhan seafood market allowed for a rapid dispersion of the COVID-19 virus — seems less certain now. OPINION | Origins of SARS-CoV-2: Why the lab-leak idea is being considered again
Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been various hypotheses to explain the origin of SARS-CoV-2. So far, none of these hypotheses have shown the origins of the virus. One of the first scenarios put forward — that the Wuhan seafood market allowed for a rapid dispersion of the virus — seems less certain now. After a year of intensive research, the virus has still not been identified in any animals.

Magnetic Powdered Activated Carbon: A Promising Adsorbent for Water Treatment?
In dealing with seasonal taste and odor events or to remove emerging pollutants from drinking water, powdered activated carbon (PAC) is effective but cost intensive. For example, assuming a unit cost of 2.5 Can$/kg PAC (approximately 1.9 US$/kg), an average-sized drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) with an average flow of 40 mgd (150,000 m3 water per day) can spend roughly Can$170,000 (or US$130,000) over a three-month taste-and-odor event when dosing at 5 mg/L of PAC.
Biological Ion Exchange Provides DOC Removal in Small Communities
The Dzit'lain'li community, also known as Middle River, sits alongside the quiet riverbank upstream from Trembleur Lake in central British Columbia, Canada. The community, a part of the Tl'azt'en Nation, has a seasonal population that fluctuates from five to more than 40 people. Since 1998, researchers have attempted to identify a water treatment system appropriate for the community and robust enough to treat high organics, turbidity, and bacteriological loading.
