Giannis Antetokounmpo Now Eligible For Extension, Waiting Until January Adds $82M
Giannis Antetokounmpo became eligible for a contract extension with the Miami Heat on Oct. 1. However, holding off until January, or even until the 2027 offseason, would allow him to sign for substantially more money. Because the Milwaukee Bucks traded him to Miami on July 6, his current options are limited as he can extend for three years and $194 million, or two years and $135.1 million. Jan. 6 is the six-month mark following the trade.

Which NBA deals will get done? Bobby Marks' biggest extension decisions to watch Original
The NBA season starts in one week, but that isn't the only thing on the minds of league executives. The deadline for rookie extensions is Monday, a day before the 2026-27 regular season tips off. Since the start of the offseason, five players -- Victor Wembanyama, Amen and Ausar Thompson, Keyonte George and Brandin Podziemski -- have signed rookie extensions. That's currently far below the average of 11 rookie extensions signed per year since 2023, but expect that number to rise in the coming days.

NBA Has Had More Players Change Team Via Trade Than Free Agency This Offseason
The NBA's current collective bargaining agreement, which took effect in 2023, has substantially reduced player movement in free agency. Just 35 free agents signed with new teams this summer, while 75 percent of players under contract remain on the same roster as last season.

2 transgender girls drop NH lawsuit after Supreme Court ruling
CONCORD, N.H. -- Two transgender girls who were the first to challenge President Donald Trump's executive order "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports" have withdrawn their lawsuit in New Hampshire based on a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld state bans on transgender athletes in girls' sports and their own personal hardships, their lawyer said.
NBA offseason, free agency, trade market: Top unresolved storylines Original
We're now more than three weeks past the NBA draft, and most of the big moves of the offseason have already happened. From AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer and Caleb Wilson being picked at the top of the draft, to Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown and LaMelo Ball among the big-name players changing teams via trade, it has been an eventful few weeks across the NBA. But it's not over just yet.
LeBron James' free agency market: What six teams can offer him Original
For the first time since 2018, LeBron James is available in free agency. James informed the Los Angeles Lakers last month that he intends to play his 24th NBA season elsewhere, ending his eight-year run with the franchise. The 41-year-old is now an unrestricted free agent, coming off a season in which he averaged 20.9 points 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds on 51.5% shooting. In other words: James can still help a team, which is exactly what he intends.
Warriors Can No Longer Offer LeBron James Midlevel Exception At $15.1M
The Golden State Warriors are unlikely to be able to offer LeBron James the full non-taxpayer midlevel exception at $15.1 million after reaching agreement with Kristaps Porzingis on a two-year, $40 million deal. The Warriors are $27 million below the first apron and that figure does not include a new contract for Draymond Green. While teams are allowed to exceed the apron to sign incumbent players, using more than $6.1 million of the exception hard caps them at the first apron.
Jaylen Brown's 'Lukewarm' Trade Market Could Push Celtics To Retain Him
The Boston Celtics are being met with a "lukewarm" trade market for Jaylen Brown as they engage with multiple teams following their initial talks for Giannis Antetokounmpo. If the Celtics are unable to find a team willing to meet their asking price, they could try to repair the relationship with Brown. "We're seeing kind of a lukewarm market for where Jaylen Brown is," said Bobby Marks on NBA Today.

Ighodaro's contract was already guaranteed for $250,000 and was set to increase to $500,000 guaranteed on Suns opening night next season. The deal would have become fully guaranteed for $2.3 million on the league-wide guarantee date of January 10, 2027. In his second NBA season, Ighodaro played in all 82 games with 24 starts.
Anthony Edwards Must Wait Until 2027 To Sign Four-Year, $300M Supermax Due To 65-Game Rule
Because Anthony Edwards was ineligible for All-NBA this season because he didn't reach the 65-game minimum, he is not eligible to sign a four-year, $300 million supermax extension. Instead, Edwards is only eligible to extend for two years and $122 million this offseason. Edwards filed an extraordinary circumstances appeal, but it was denied by an arbitrator. Luka Doncic and Cade Cunningham also filed the same appeal, but it was granted in their cases.
Victor Wembanyama Will Need To Make All-NBA Team Again In 2027 To Qualify For 30 Percent Max Original

Wembanyama was on his way to winning Defensive Player of the Year during the 2024-25 season, but he didn't reach the 65-game minimum due to his deep vein thrombosis condition diagnosed after the All-Star break in 2025.

In the next few months, more than 100 players -- including Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, Nikola Jokic and Donovan Mitchell -- are eligible to extend their contracts. The change in extension rules in the 2017 and 2023 collective bargaining agreements have incentivized players to take guaranteed money now instead of waiting until they become free agents.
