Most retellings of Johnny Cash's latter years, including the Cash-heavy Ken Burns docuseries Country Music, justifiably credit American Recordings founder and producer Rick Rubin for fully capturing the Man in Black’s gruff appeal across a series of bare-bones albums. Yet for Rubin to get a shot at writing the final chapter of the Cash legend, two major labels had to turn in their own sloppy drafts.
Baltimore Electeds Should Own Up to Their Role in this Summer’s Pool Closures
Summer is in full swing in Baltimore and, as expected in mid-July, it is hot. As I walk my three-year-old daughter in Patterson Park, she points to the city-run pool and asks, “Daddy, pool ready?” I have to explain to her that the pool is broken and we can’t swim. She frowns and looks down at the ground. READ FULL ARTICLE HERE

53 Years Ago: Tammy Wynette's 'Stand By Your Man' Tops Country Charts
During the politically turbulent year of 1968, Tammy Wynette’s signature song “Stand By Your Man” was out of place to some. Since April of that year, the clear messages behind Loretta Lynn’s “Fist City,” Wynette’s “D-I-V-O-R-C-E” and Jeannie C. Riley’s “Harper Valley PTA" brought the social awareness of the times to the top of the country charts. Suddenly, a portion of the audience turned their radio dials to a country hit that seemed to apologize for unfaithful and abusive men.

10 Country Albums That Turned 40 in 2020
Despite the polarizing crossover success of 1980's Urban Cowboy film and soundtrack, legends and old souls stood tall throughout the first year of a new decade. It's hard now to imagine the legacies of Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton without their biggest songs of 1980. Meanwhile, Alabama, John Anderson, Emmylou Harris and Hank Williams Jr. found commercial success while honoring country music's past.

22 Years Ago: Garth Brooks Changes Live Album Expectations With 'Double Live'
In the 1990s, CDs sold like hotcakes. As that trend turned underdogs such as Alanis Morissette and future country star Darius Rucker’s Hootie & the Blowfish into household names, Garth Brooks became more than just an established star. He rewrote the record books when it came to album sales, with seven multi-platinum albums issued between 1989 and 1997.

They all come together inside the church to worship and heal together.
Jim Varney: The Real Life 'Ernest' Was Just as Lovable Off-Screen
Actor Jim Varney was easily one of the funniest guys in children's entertainment in the '80s and '90s. Best known for his iconic character, "Ernest P. Worrell," Varney was a southern boy that made it big, finding his niche in family comedies. James Varney Jr. had an affinity to entertain from an early age, regularly memorizing poems or book passages and performing them for friends and family while growing up in Lexington, Kentucky.

For an added full band effect, one of the best entertainers in popular music "cloned" himself, with editing tricks making it look like two other Keiths backed the real McCoy.
Brad Paisley Crashed Elementary School Teachers' Zoom Meeting
Brad Paisley's latest good deed could be titled "There's No I in Zoom." The country star, who'd shared a phone number for those interested in having him crash their Zoom video conferences, got invited to Oak Grove Elementary School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi's "Teachers' Night In" by third grade educator Ashlyn Williamson. John Wayne, Family Man: Get to Know The Duke's 7 Children
Actor John Wayne, known as The Duke by many dads and cowboy movie lovers, was a Hollywood and American icon. His western movies, such as The Searchers, Stagecoach, and Rio Grande, often overseen by director John Ford, are still iconic pieces of Hollywood western lore. But the man who starred in The Quiet Man and Sands of Iwo Jima and as Rooster Cogburn in True Grit (his only Academy Award win) was far more than just an actor. He was a family man as well.
Calamity Jane: The Real Woman Behind the Wild West Legend
Calamity Jane is one of the most notorious figures of the Old West. A skilled sharpshooter who was equally skilled in the art of profanity, she was the embodiment of what many on the frontier considered "unladylike." And that was just fine by her. Legends say she rode with real cowboys. General Custer, Wild Bill Hickok, and Buffalo Bill Cody are among her acquaintances. She was also known to spread salacious dime novel-worth rumors about herself.
Hear Brad Paisley's 'Dang Me,' a True-to-the-Original Tribute to the Great Roger Miller
When we heard there was going to be a Roger Miller tribute album, you better believe we thought Brad Paisley should be on it. And when you hear Paisley's version of the Miller classic "Dang Me," you'll see why. The "Chug-a-lug" singer rose to fame in the 1960s on the back of his humor and novelty songs. And the self-deprecating "Dang Me" had a lot to do with his rise. One of Miller's signature songs, "Dang Me," tells the tale of a royal screw up.
Be My Guest - Football Superstars in Australia
Authors: Jason Goldsmith and Lucas Gillard 'Be My Guest' is a tribute to the many football superstars who have played club football in Australia, as well as the simple, elegant but often flawed logic that bringing football superstars to Australia will provide a turbo boost to Australia's domestic football competition - whether that be the NSL or the A-League.

'The Big Valley': Women Ruled the Ranch on This Classic TV Western
When you look back on the iconic TV westerns, a female character rarely leads the story. Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Bonanza, The Lone Ranger; they all center on a male-led cast. But The Big Valley went against the norm and centered on a female lead, proving that women can also rule the wild west. The show was loosely based on The Hill Ranch, a real California ranch that was around from 1855 until 1931. It followed the Barkley family, who was one of the wealthiest families in Stockton, California.
The Loves and Rumored Romances of Elvis Presley, From Priscilla to Ann-Margret
Elvis Presley has always had a reputation as a ladies man. The King of Rock 'n' Roll had many a lady guest visit Graceland in Memphis as well as his Las Vegas hotels over the years (who can resist a rock legend who was also a soldier in the United States Army, right?). Nearly all of Elvis's affairs over the years ranged somewhere from legendary secrets to media maelstrom. Here are five of The King's most famous female companions. 1.
Shenandoah on Deep South Predecessors Alabama and Lynyrd Skynyrd (Interview)
Number one hits "The Church on Cumberland Road," "Sunday in the South," Two Dozen Roses" and the bluegrass-inspired "Next to You, Next to Me" cemented Shenandoah's place in country music history. Toss in the Grammy award-winning Alison Krauss collaboration "Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart," and it should come as no surprise that the reputable band's plotting a new album with some of country music's brightest young stars, in the same vein as Brooks & Dunn's Reboot.

There's something to be said about putting your heart out there -- even if it gets horribly broken. Singer-songwriter Alex Stern explores the risk and reward of love on the tender "The Choice." "Writing this song gave me courage to confront the truth about the experience that inspired it and to find beauty and clarity in the brokenness of it," Stern tells Wide Open Country.
