EVERYONE is so happy for Bobby Ryan, who leads the NHL in goals early in the season
BarDown Staff Bobby Ryan , (Photo by Dave Reginek/NHLI via Getty Images) Last season, it’s hard to imagine what Bobby Ryan was going through. Ryan opens up on quarantined life in Idaho
Bobby Ryan is not one of those athletes or celebrities who is worried about trying to find a barber during the quarantine phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’ve been saving money on haircuts for years because I married a now-retired hairdresser from Newport Beach,” Ryan said with a laugh. “So I’m way ahead of the game. I’ve been getting my hair cut by her for 11 years now.” But earlier this week, the pandemic lockdown forced a role reversal.

I had to stop going to the grocery store this season. For one reason or another, the grocery store has always been where I get recognized the most in Ottawa. I can hang out in pretty much any restaurant or bar and be in the clear, but at the grocery store I’ll pretty much always be spotted. For the most part, I’ve always enjoyed that. Engaging fans is one of the most rewarding things about making it to the NHL.
Dear Mom | By Bobby Ryan
Dear Mom, I lost you just a few days ago, and I already miss you a lot. Even though I had a chance to say goodbye, there are still a few things I’d like to tell you. Plenty of people are familiar with our family’s story. They know about how dad assaulted you when I was a little kid and how our family ended up moving to California and changing our names so he could avoid going to jail. They know about how he was eventually caught and how you and I had to figure things out on our own.

Bobby Ryan responds to comparisons of his contract to Roberto Luongo’s
Bobby Ryan is in the fifth year of a seven-year, $50.75 million contract extension he signed with the Senators back in 2013. However, his role with the team has been trending down recently, culminating in being a healthy scratch from the lineup on Sunday against the Sharks. Ryan doesn’t seem to be part of the long-term plans for the rebuilding Sens, but is he a candidate for a trade?

Sens' Ryan (finger) out at least three weeks
Sens' Ryan (finger) out at least three weeks Ottawa Senators coach Guy Boucher says winger Bobby Ryan isn't anywhere close to a return. According to the coach, the 30-year-old native of Cherry Hill, NJ is dealing with a "ligament thing" and is out at least three weeks. This is the third time Ryan will be sidelined with a finger ailment this season. He incurred an injury during a December 21 game with the Tampa Bay Lightning that kept him out of the lineup until December 30.
Senators F Ryan out with another hand injury
Ottawa Senators forward Bobby Ryan is out with another hand injury but coach Guy Boucher says this ailment is different from the ones he has suffered in the past. Ryan scored a third-period, power-play goal Thursday night to give the Senators a 1-0 lead over the Anaheim Ducks, but left the game shortly after. It's the fourth time this season that Ryan will miss time with a hand injury and the eighth time since joining the Senators in the 2013-14 season.
Bobby Ryan has the absolute worst luck with hand injuries
Earlier this season, Ryan broke his right index finger for the second time in eight months after getting in front of a shot from defenceman Ron Hainsey. By missing eight games, it marked the fifth straight season where the 2nd overall pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft had missed a game due to an injury involving one of his hands.

My Mom, My Hero | By David Nelson with Kathy Belcoff
When I was born, my mom was 19.Kathy: This was back in Fort Worth, Texas. I had been on the track team in high school, and by that point it wasn’t surprising that I had gotten pretty good. You see, I have eight siblings — including four brothers. So if I wanted to have fun growing up, I had little choice but to be good at sports.

The List | The Players' Tribune
I was woken up by a loud knock on my door at my around four in the morning. Honestly, I was furious. Who in the hell would be knocking at my door at this hour? It didn’t occur to me that there might be something wrong. In general, I don’t think in those terms. I just knew that I had a lot of important things to attend to that day, and I didn’t need this kind of distraction. As I stomped to my entryway, I was ready to lay into whoever woke me up. But when I opened the door, I paused.

Thank You, Thank You, Merci, Vancouver
I still remember the day that I became a Canuck. I mean I remember it exactly: January 2, 2006. Don’t even think about asking me if I looked it up. Seriously, get out of here with that question. I’ll always know this date by heart. It was a Monday afternoon, and the team was in St. Louis. I dropped off my stuff at the hotel, and caught a bus to the rink. I got off the bus. Walked into the Savvis Center (trying to look like a Cool NHL Guy, you know, but probably doing a bad job).

Winnipeg Jets hold off Ottawa Senators
OTTAWA -- After such a good start, the Winnipeg Jets had to wait until after the final buzzer sounded for confirmation of their second win this weekend. Finally, video review on a scramble around goalie Connor Hellebuyck's net proved inconclusive and the Jets left Canadian Tire Centre with a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday. "That was guaranteed out," Hellebuyck, who made 32 saves, said of the last-ditch attempt by Senators center Jean-Gabriel Pageau.
The Derek I Know
This is the first of a new editorial series in which family members, friends, and those closest to them, share special insights into the athletes they love. I know it sounds strange that I didn’t know he was a shortstop. When a mutual friend introduced us while I was at dinner with my mom in New York, I didn’t really know who Derek was at all. I can just imagine all of the New Yorkers reading this right now thinking, Oh, come aawwnn. They probably don’t believe me.

My Brother Dave | The Players' Tribune
When I was 12, I asked my parents to send me to a week-long hockey camp at Bemidji State University. The school is three hours away from where we lived on the east side of St. Paul. My dad, Edward Holmgren, worked for the U.S. Post Office while my mom stayed home to raise the family. Finances were usually pretty tight. There was certainly enough food to eat, but we didn’t have $110 to spare for me to go to hockey camp. In 1967, that was the equivalent of nearly $800 today.

The /r/hockey roast of: The Minnesota Wild (8/30)
The Minnesota Wild are that type of team that will never give up. It hasn't gotten them anywhere so far, but they're still going at it. Need star power? Get Parise! A few years later, need more (albeit aging) star power? Eric Staal! But seriously, the Wild could be a good team, but it appears their plan at this point is more ambiguous than their logo which on /r/hockey, has more involved discussion than a thread about the Vegas team.
Five must-know facts about Patrick Kane's 25-game scoring streak
When the Chicago Blackhawks take on the Vancouver Canucks at the United Center Sunday night, Patrick Kane will be putting his 25-game scoring streak on the line. Should he add a 26th game to the streak Sunday, it will officially be the longest such run since the 1992-93 season. It would also get Kane a step closer to Wayne Gretzky's record of 51 consecutive games with a point set back in 1983-84. Only 25 steps to go after that.
