TYLER, Texas — Weekly fishing tournaments are a rite of summer in East Texas. Most tournaments focus on bass, with only a handful catering to crappie anglers. A crappie tournament is being highlighted as a way to kick off the summer fishing season. The May Madness Crappie Throwdown will be held May 30 on Lake Tyler. To learn more, organizers met with Caleb Hensley, a Tyler ISD teacher and creator of 903 Fishing, a digital media platform focused on crappie fishing.

TYLER, Texas — “Fish on!” We heard it again and again at this year’s fourth annual CBS19 Urban Kids Fishing Derby. Many came for the fishing but left with something more — friendship, community and togetherness. Roughly 250 anglers of all ages lined the pond at Woldert Park on Tyler’s north side, hoping for tight lines. By day’s end, many had reeled in much more than fish. A young angler named T.T. caught her first fish, while another, Aliyah, landed the tiniest catch of the day.
