Developing an insurance programme to protect against cyber risk
This is an Insight article, written by a selected contributor as part of GIR's co-published content. Read more on Insight Insurance should be a central part of every company’s breach preparedness strategy. We live in a world in which perfect security is not attainable. It has been shown time and time again that sophisticated hackers – given enough time and resources – can penetrate even the most advanced defences.
What one Russian journalist saw when he came home - and why he stayed
"The truth is that repression in Russia is still very selective and limited. Even if you’re against the war, it’s much more likely that you’ll be hit by a car or killed by a falling brick than be repressed. But you don’t get paranoid about bricks every time you go outside, do you?” So begins an extraordinary dispatch from The Moscow Times — which, despite the name, is Dutch, not Russian.
Anticipating Artificial Insurer Defenses: Maximizing Insurance Coverage for AI Exposures
In Short The Situation: The global market for artificial intelligence ("AI") technologies is projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2030. The Result: In addition to productivity and efficiency improvements, the integration of AI technologies into business operations may create new, or amplify existing, enterprise risks. Looking Ahead: Commercial policyholders should proactively review their insurance coverage provisions to guard against the risk of AI-related claims and losses.

Letter: Accessory dwellings could be affordable housing
When I was a member of the Charlestown Affordable Housing Commission I was struck by a comment made by the chairperson of the commission who said that her grown son’s friends had to move away from the town where they grew up because they couldn’t afford to buy a house and start a family in Charlestown. Affordable housing (including rentals) in Charlestown and elsewhere in Washington County are few and far between.

Book excerpt: 'Five Floors Up: The Heroic Family Story of Four Generations in the FDNY'
By Brian McDonald In February 1972, the fire department promoted Bill to captain and assigned him to Engine 59 in Harlem. At evening mealtime his first day in Engine 59, a newly minted Captain Feehan walked into the kitchen in the firehouse to see the members of his company, burly veteran firefighters, sitting around the table naked. Completely. No boots, no pants, no shirts, no underwear. Birthday suits. The first thing that came to Bill’s mind was that it wasn’t a pretty sight he was looking at.

The biggest San Francisco tech news stories of 2022 so far
There’s no escaping the tech industry when you live in San Francisco, but ever since the beginning of the pandemic, it can feel as if the tech industry itself is trying to escape the city by the bay. The theme of the past couple of years in Silicon Valley has largely been one of exodus, which continued this year with companies like Slack and Robinhood pivoting to remote work policies.
Personal View: How middle market companies can advance ESG while supporting business goals
Increased awareness around climate change, racial and social equity issues and COVID-19 has changed the way that many Ohio companies think about environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. The pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in our economic, political and social systems, as well as the need for resilience in our businesses, including our supply chains and larger ecosystems. This convergence of factors has made ESG a focal point for companies of all sizes.

Violence & the Lamb Slain by Brian McDonald
Interview An Interview with Rene Girard by Brian McDonald Rene Girard is both one of the twentieth century’s most prominent theorists of culture and a devout Roman Catholic. Born and raised in France, Girard received his Ph.D. in history from Indiana University and has lived and taught for most of his life in America. He combines a “deconstructionist” and “debunking” analysis of the origins and bases of human culture with an essentially traditionalist affirmation of Christianity.
Yes on Pasadena school district’s Measure O, essential to shoring up campuses
Public school district trustees and administrators must often wear two hats. We are, of course, responsible for providing students with the best education possible. But at the same time, voters rightly demand that we prudently manage taxpayer dollars, taking special care to watch every penny spent. These two often opposing goals require a careful balancing act. If either is out of balance the consequences can be devastating.
Thank you all for rising to the COVID-19 challenge
Dear PUSD Community, This has been one of the most eventful years in the history of our district. The last few months have been a time of major adjustments and change as together we honored the Safer at Home public health orders and slowed the spread of COVID-19. I must take a minute to thank our amazing teachers, administrators and staff for ensuring that learning continues for our students.
Personal View: Manufacturing the next generation of Cleveland talent
To retain skilled workers, manufacturers must take a variety of steps, from improving wages and benefits to developing their current workforce through promotions and training. Many manufacturers are also revisiting rigid hiring rules, trading job requirements for previous experience, making room for part-time workers and welcoming retired workers back to their companies.
Fashion tells YOUR story
From first through eighth grade, I attended a Catholic school that required a strict uniform: white polo shirt, khaki pants and brown or black shoes. And for those eight years, my sense of fashion told a story of imprisonment and boredom. And, when I eventually graduated and attended a public high school, I felt like I was being thrown to the wolves.

INDIE VIEW: 'Old Souls' shows reincarnation as problematic
Old Souls Written by Brian McDonald Illustrate by Les McLaine First Second I think the reason I never warmed up to the idea of reincarnation as a spiritual belief worth having — and I say that with the caveat that I don’t really have spiritual beliefs — is that, as a kid, there seemed to be a lot of cheesy horror about it. Cheesy now.

Pasadena Now " Letter to the Community| From Pasadena Unified Superintendent Dr. Brian McDonald
I am pleased to share with you that student achievement in the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) continues to move in the right direction, with student achievement making steady upward progress. Since 2015, the percentage of PUSD students who met or exceeded standards has increased by 8% in English Language Arts (ELA) and 6% in Math on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).
Pasadena Now " Pasadena Unified School District Message from Superintendent Brian McDonald
Although for some years state funding for transportation has not been enough to cover mandated busing costs, Pasadena Unified continued to provide general education transportation for an average 345 students each day. PUSD currently operates seven general education buses for students who attend schools other than their school of residence and for other purposes.
Pasadena Now " Letters
I’m inspired by our students every day and am proud of the young adults they are becoming: critical and creative thinkers deeply connected to the world around them, capable of communicating their values with clarity. Their voices matter and our district is committed to guiding them so that they are well-prepared to be effective and positive leaders of tomorrow.
Jimmy Breslin: The Tabloid Bard
The first time I read Jimmy Breslin, I was lying on my stomach on a living room rug, the Sunday paper spread in front of me. I was maybe 10. I knew who he was before I read him, of course. Every working-class home in New York in the 1960s did. He was kitchen-table conversation.
Start Em/Sit Em Fantasy Advice For Week 5
It’s time to adjust our expectations, not just with the win-loss record for the Houston Texans, but also with the fantasy football production from their key players. Doing something once is nice, but when a good performance like Deshaun Watson had against the New England Patriots in Week 3 is not only repeated, but topped in dramatic fashion, it’s natural to overreact.
Start Em/Sit Em Fantasy Advice For Week 4
Like Randy Orton, the Houston Texans found some offense outta nowhere last week during a close loss at New England. That performance was exciting and encouraging, but we have to avoid the tendency of fans—especially fantasy football players—to overreact to one game. After three games played, the Patriots defense ranks last in yards allowed, second to last in points allowed, 22nd in turnovers forced, and 26th in sacks; the Texans didn’t put those numbers up against the ’85 Bears.
Pasadena schools aim to remove barriers to success: Brian McDonald
We at the Pasadena Unified School District are rapidly moving toward becoming the first choice in education for families seeking academic excellence, innovation and diversity in both programs and students. We see this among families who have returned to PUSD for our dual-language immersion, STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — and arts and high school programs. Our schools are stronger and our students are achieving and gaining admission to elite colleges and universities.
Speed limits are already posted on roads so traffic camera locations are irrelevant
The average number of U.S. deaths per year are approximately: terrorism, less than 50; weather, 500; firearm homicides,10,000; firearm suicides, 20,000; cars, 35,000. If we're investing billions in anti-terrorism efforts, then why not spend millions to improve driving safety? Speeders and people like letter writer Tim Urban [Traffic cameras generate revenue, don't deter, Sept.
Know nothing, suspect everything: We are fostering a divided nation
Today our country is being psychologically divided by the confusion and the suspicions that are polarized in Congress, the media and the internet to spread like cancerous tentacles of "know nothing, suspect everything." The only thing more diverse than America's population is the diversity we have in our opinions. We need to listen to all people's free speech, consider factual truths, and for politicians to legislate the people's will.
A pledge for politicians: It's time to listen to 'we the people'
Politicians should heed the wisdom of our founding fathers to form a more perfect union. We the people ask for liberty and justice for all. The people speak, the media presses, activists protest, but the government does not redress the people's grievances (health care). Are the words of our founding fathers to be cherished, assimilated and begotten or should these words be perished, repudiated and forgotten?
Navigating Disclosure Requirements When Applying for Insurance
Applying for liability insurance can be a time-consuming and tedious task for even the most experienced of policyholders. Insurance applications and related submissions should be carefully completed lest an inadvertent mistake or omission encourage insurers to deny coverage later. One potential pitfall in the application process relates to disclosure of potential claims that might arise in the future.
Start Em/Sit Em Fantasy Advice For Week 8
The start ’em/sit ’em advice on this article last week was, unfortunately, nearly 100-percent accurate. Brock Osweiler scored four points in standard ESPN leagues; only Cody Kessler and Brian Hoyer scored less among QB’s who attempted a pass last week. Lamar Miller averaged over five yards per carry against Denver before suffering an early injury that limited his rushing attempts to just 11.
Start Em/Sit Em Fantasy Advice For Week 7
Patience was rewarded last week for fantasy owners who have Lamar Miller on their team and kept him in their starting lineup. As I hope you recall, it was this article that predicted Miller would end his touchdown drought against the Colts; let’s hope that momentum keeps going.
Start Em/Sit Em Fantasy Advice For Week 6
The Houston Texans players and coaches probably moved on from their loss last week at Minnesota as quickly as possible, but fantasy football owners don’t have that luxury. Bill O’Brien likes to say they’re on to the next opponent each week at his press conference, but fantasy football players need to look over what we saw and figure out if that performance should change their strategy going forward.
Start Em/Sit Em Fantasy Advice For Week 5
Good week overall for the start ’em/sit ’em advice with the picks for the Tennessee Titans game, but that one catch performance from DeAndre Hopkins left a sour taste in my mouth. Hopkins has trended in the wrong direction for two straight weeks, but I’m not ready to back off the “always start your studs” approach, which I’ll elaborate more on later in this article.
Start Em/Sit Em Fantasy Advice For Week 4
While the advice on this article last week performed better than the Houston Texans on the field against the New England Patriots, there were still a few misses. So where did we go wrong? The first thing we learned is that we can’t trust Brock Osweiler unless he has a home matchup against a very soft defense, and even then, he should only be used as a bye week replacement or as a cost-saving play in daily fantasy.

Superintendent gives final offer to PUSD teachers: Guest commentary
As superintendent of the Pasadena Unified School District, I am inspired by the achievements of our students and the passion of our staff. For instance, standout Rose City High School senior Dalon Poole was recently honored by first lady Michele Obama for his contributions to the world of photography. Dalon has a drive for creative excellence.
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: The One Punch Each Fighter Must Land to Win
In just the blink of an eye, everything can change. With boxers at the skill level of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, delivering a punch with devastating consequences might actually take less time than a blink of an eye. One punch can change the fight, one punch can change a career and just that one punch can either cement a legacy into the history books or conversely cause it to crumble into rubble like it was hit with a sledgehammer.
VIDEO: Giant wave sweeps student off Aran Islands cliff; Couple rush to save her
A young couple are being hailed as heroes after saving the life of a student who was swept off a cliff face by a giant wave. The terrifying accident happened at the renowned Wormhole on Inis Mor, the largest of the three Aran Islands off Galway last week. The Wormhole, which is regularly used as a diving location for the Red Bull Cliff Diving series, is a natural rectangular shaped pool into which the sea ebbs and flow at the bottom of the cliffs south of Dún Aonghasa.
Pasadena school district smaller, leaner with fewer kids: Brian McDonald
The Pasadena Unified School District is shrinking, and not for the reasons you might expect. There are fewer kids being born in our area and fewer families with school-age kids able to afford to live within our boundaries. What this means is less money flowing to our schools and some hard choices that need to be made as we consider the district’s immediate and long-term future. PUSD’s enrollment at the turn of the century was 19,130. Today it is 17,270.
User Preferences and Styling – SQLServerCentral
Recently Adam Aspin posted some great articles on using stylesheets and custom code to help developers standardize the report presentation layer (Add Styles to Your Reporting Services Reports, Centralising Reporting Services Stylesheets, and Report Templates Using Stylesheets). The thought of each of us seeing the same exact thing can sometimes seem daunting and boring to users, which can lead to lack of absorption into the user community.
