Taylor Madison wasn’t sure if he’d make it. When the former Sevier County track and field standout arrived up the road in Jefferson City at Carson-Newman University a year ago, he knew he faced an uphill battle to make the relay team. Madison, who was a kicker on the Smoky Bears’ TSSAA Class 5A State Champion football team in 2024, was coming off of his freshman season for the Eagles’ football program and had to transition quickly for the track and field season in the spring.

The Sevier County standout tight end and linebacker committed to Duke on Friday, May 29, 2026 during his official visit to the school. Newman, who is preparing for his senior season with the Smoky Bears and the pursuit of the program’s second TSSAA Class 5A state championship in three years, picked the Blue Devils over a plethora of high-profile suitors.

MURFREESBORO — Jason Owens and the Gatlinburg-Pittman soccer team stood silently on the rain-soaked turf at Richard Siegel Soccer Complex Friday. The Highlanders’ postseason run had just ended on its grandest stage, a 2-1 defeat to Independence in the TSSA Class 1A State Championship Game. Some Gatlinburg-Pittman players watched as the Eagles celebrated. Some put their arms around each other. Some stared blankly.
