Northern Ontario farmers are being asked this summer to take part in a soil-sampling study to help researchers have a better handle on a disease known to kill canola plants and reduce crop yields. The volunteer clubroot study, to be conducted throughout July and August, is being overseen by the Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance (NOFIA).

Conmee's mayor and fire chief are advising the community that emergency responses may sometimes be "limited" due to an ongoing shortage of volunteers, as well as those qualified to serve in specific roles under updated provincial requirements for firefighters. In a letter to "all residents" that was mailed out last week, Mayor Sheila Maxwell and Chief Robb Day say the local fire department is struggling to meet the new requirements that took effect on July 1.

THUNDER BAY — Plans to bump up speed limits on the majority of Ontario's major highways by the fall don't appear to include well-travelled routes in Northwestern Ontario, but there doesn't seem to be a consensus on making that move in any event. "Speed limits on highways 11 and 17 are not being increased," a spokesman for Conservative MPP Kevin Holland, who represents the Thunder Bay-Atikokan riding, said on Thursday.
