Hondurans Displaced by the Rising Tide: “All That Remains in Cedeño Is Destruction”
Leer en español The history of Cedeño has two pivotal moments. It is passed down by the elders who lived through what they consider the best of times — when there were two-story hotels and restaurants facing the sea; when the mangrove forest seemed untouched; when shrimp farms, salt flats, and brick kilns had not yet cleared hectares of forest. Today, in this village located 175 kilometers from Tegucigalpa on the Gulf of Fonseca, the landscape is desolate.
Saving a Mangrove Forest: A Costa Rican Community’s Sisyphean Task
Leer en español More than four decades ago, when Rebeca Espinoza was a little girl, her father would travel along the Sierpe River and through the mangrove channels to fish and pianguar — extract mollusks from among the roots and mud of the mangrove swamp, a practice known in other Central American countries as curilear. In those days, a dye extracted from the mangrove tree was used to dye leather.
