Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
First student job was the A&E editor at my first college's newspaper, The Index. First REAL job outside of school is my current job.
How is social media changing news?
Anyone can be a journalist. Anyone can have a beat. Anyone can write. Whether its good or bad is up to the person with the ideas.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
April O'Neil
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Adobe, Wordpress and good ol' Microsoft Office.
Why did you become a journalist?
To better understand and help my community become more connected.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I kind of hated my HS newspaper. I was an opinion columnist. As a 16-year old I did NOT have any opinions to speak of, haha.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I did a ton of coverage regarding the Charlie Kirk assassination. The community response and outcry shaped how I cover these types of events.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Keep at it. Don't let your box, beat or job title confine you. Make the most out of each day and push the envelope.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Someone who submitted a LTTE when I was working at The Post wrote maybe the worst yet outlandishly funny editorial I have ever seen.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Pitchfork for sure.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Covering local government doesn't just mean going to city council meetings and covering local ordinances.
