Violent star system is blasting giant spirals across space

Hubble has captured stunning new images of R Aquarii, a violent binary star system that blasts glowing spirals of gas across space. Today’s Image of the Day features a star system that looks more like a cosmic storm than a quiet corner of the Milky Way. Bright loops of glowing gas stretch billions of miles outward from a violent pair of stars locked together in an unstable relationship. The system, known as R Aquarii, is located about 700 light-years from Earth.

Something is draining energy from the Tarantula Nebula

Astronomers studying the Tarantula Nebula found that it may be losing energy through several processes, including hot gas escaping into space. Today’s Image of the Day from NASA reveals one of the busiest stellar nurseries near our galaxy in a burst of color. Thousands of young stars crowd a landscape of glowing gas and dust, while powerful stellar winds tear through the material around them. This is 30 Doradus, better known as the Tarantula Nebula.

New Mexico’s largest reservoir shrinks to its lowest level in 55 years

Drought has pushed New Mexico’s Elephant Butte Reservoir to its lowest level since 1971, leaving it at just 1.4 percent capacity. Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows just how dramatically drought has changed one of the Southwest’s most important reservoirs. Elephant Butte Reservoir in New Mexico has shrunk to a fraction of the lake it was three decades ago. The contrast is stark. In June 1994, water filled most of the reservoir’s long, branching footprint along the Rio Grande.
