1 INTRODUCTION There is a flourishing literature across the social sciences on the link between political preferences and individual economic status. One very common finding is that the wealthier are more Right-wing and less favourable to redistribution than are the poorer.1 This is often argued to reflect self-interest, with the richer having more to lose from redistributive policies. Part of this research has looked at changes in status over time, that is, mobility.

What all these trips have in common is that after the drop-off there is the inevitable pick-up. It’s a cycle. One day, however, if all goes well and you are very, very fortunate, there comes a different kind of drop-off, one often made by automobile.
