Drops of dew on a fallen aspen leaf are deceiving. Severe drought, according to the National Drought Information System, can make leaves change colors early. Lower water levels at the Thomson Reservoir allow vegetation to grow in areas where the water is usually deeper this time of year. About 377 cubic feet of water is released every second at the Thomson Dam. The usual flow is about 1,250 cubic feet per second, with common springtime flow rates from 10,000 cfs to 20,000 cfs.

ESKO — Many community members across Carlton County gathered Tuesday for National Night Out celebrations hosted by their city or neighbors. In Esko, National Night Out also kicked off the annual Esko Fun Days celebration, which continues through Saturday.
