by Constance Cullman, President and CEO, American Feed Industry Association Instead of asking farmers and feed producers to do something entirely new, what if one of agriculture’s greatest sustainability opportunities is deeply understanding the value of what they already do and using that knowledge to do it even better? What if building on tradition is what paves ‘The Road to 2050?’ Before it was called ‘sustainability,’ the animal agriculture industry pursued efficiency out of necessity.

Prevent another global economic meltdown like the Great Depression. Out of that summit came the Bretton Woods Agreement, which laid the groundwork for a new global economic order – complete with stable currencies, institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and a strong push for lower tariffs to encourage free trade.

Devising strategies to ensure the supply of essential nutrients to the US pet industry

However, global supply chains continue to face challenges that ripple through industries and threaten the stability of the food and agriculture system. Targeted analysis One notable area of concern for the US animal food industry is that very few countries supply the world’s vitamins and amino acids. Reflecting on Five Years of Transformation at the American Feed Industry Association

When simply not losing is a win
There is an old saying, “You win some, you lose some,” which the animal feed industry could use to describe 2023. While the industry has made great strides in pushing for a modernized feed regulatory environment that keeps pace with scientific advancements in animal nutrition and international competition, hurdles remain. The concept of winning as not losing has been an underrated tenet of risk management.
Opinion: American farmers need Innovative FEED Act now
When you stare into the eyes of a bull, can you tell if his systems are working properly? Likely not, as a complete veterinary exam is needed to rule out any underlying problems. As a large animal veterinarian, we know that former Rep. Ted Yoho would understand that, but what we are grappling with is why he might take that same simplistic approach to looking at new feed ingredients that can keep American agriculture competitive and combat public health and environmental issues?

AFIA: Turning the page to our next chapter
By Constance Cullman American Feed Industry Association Special to Poultry Times ARLINGTON, Va. — Last year started like any other year, with a sense of optimism about new ingredients in the pipeline that will promote better animal nutrition and health, potential trading opportunities abroad and new corporate commitments to sustainability. It's Not About What You Can't Do, It's About What You Can Do
Written by: Constance Cullman | October 29, 2020 Member value, Trade, Coronavirus As a child, I would frequently get frustrated when the world (or in this case, my parents, teachers or siblings) dictated what I couldn’t do. I had plans! One day, my favorite fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Underwood, suggested that instead of thinking about what I can’t do, that I should think about what I can do.

AFIA celebrates successful year for animal food industry
It certainly is shaping up to be a busy year for the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA). At the end of 2019, our first bit of good news came when Congress passed a budget that provided the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) funding to support efficiencies for animal food ingredient reviews. We then began 2020 with two huge wins in trade – the China Phase 1 and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
Tariffs will negate export gains
OPINION Market-access improvements included in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement will lead to an expansion of U.S. agricultural exports by $450 million, mostly in the dairy and poultry sectors. That’s according to a Purdue University analysis. But those gains will be more than negated by retaliatory measures taken by Canada and Mexico in reaction to the U.S. decision to raise import tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
