CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA — A Juneteenth festival hosted by the African American Museum of Iowa brought crowds to Cedar Rapids on Thursday, marking a tradition that dates back to June 19, 1865. That day in 1865 marked the moment Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of enslaved people more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. More than 160 years later, the African American Museum of Iowa continued that tradition with its annual Juneteenth celebration.
