February 3, 1959. A single-engine plane was to depart from Clear Lake, Iowa, en route to Fargo, North Dakota on a cold winter's night carrying a handful of the world's best musicians. The plane would never arrive. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson were performing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa as part of the Winter Dance Party Tour. Dion and the Belmonts opened the show to a packed house. The tour was to cover 24 cities in a very short period.

Remember When Sioux Falls' Zip Feed Mill Failed To Fall? [VIDEO]

Of all the things Sioux Falls is famous for, this is one of the best. It's great because of the way the town embraced the silliness of the situation. On December 3, 2005, the Zip Feed Mill, the tallest building in Sioux Falls at the time, was NOT brought down by a controlled demolition explosion. The attempt to demolish the old grain elevator became a day that lives on in memory and bobbleheads. Andy Erickson Andy Erickson The Zip Feed Tower was constructed in Sioux Falls in the mid-50s.

Recounting The Halloween Blizzard Of '91

The Halloween Blizzard of 1991 hit the Sioux Empire with over 15 inches of snow and several days of cold. It was part of a huge weather system that also inspired the George Clooney movie The Perfect Storm. The storm started with snow. Lots of snow. Then sixty-mile-an-hour winds showed up for the All Hallows Eve parties. Sioux Falls ended up with drifts measured in feet. Minnesota and Iowa took the majority of the ice with this system, while Sioux Falls and most of South Dakota got the snow.
